Yesterday, the NYTimes did a neat thing. Weather and climate impact our riding. Or lives, too, of course. But bringing climate change down to something tangible and personal isn't always easy. This interactive page from the Times really brought it home to me. See what you think:

Nothing happens after I enter place and date - I even entered my subscription info and tried again. Tips to make it work? I don't see an Enter button or similar. Thanks
Update - it works in Safari, not in Firefox. Boston was 6 days > 90F in 1960, now 4 days

Also, the information appears when you scroll down after entering location and year. Chrome was the browser I used. Sorry for any trouble.

The professors need to go back to school. The tool only goes back to 1960 and reports that Boulder, Colorado had 0 days in the 90's that year. NOAA's Earth Systems Research Laboratory's data indicates there were 52. Since NOAA's facility is located in Boulder I believe their records might be more accurate than those collected by the propeller heads in Chicago, Berkeley, Rutgers, etc. Their tool also indicates that we've only had 2 days, not the 30 plus local news reported, above 90 this year. Their end of the century predictions, 8 days above but possibly 5-14.... are laughable.

12 more days for birth city, 17 for living in city. Luckily, I'm too old to see the 70+ increases by the end of the century.

Yep, from 11 then to 19 now.

You've hit on something that is preplexing about climate change. It is not affecting the midwest as much as other parts of the world. Kinda of a nice thing for food security. But the big problem is if we get drought or consistently rising temperatures in the Midwest it will be bad as corn and soybeans are now bred to grow closely together and not to sustain drought. Monsanto has released seed technology called "aqua max". That is the only seed tech I know that is trying to address this potential problem.

It’s an interesting twist. Read an article asking climate scientists where they’d choose to live to ‘escape’ predicted climate changes and catastrophes. Many picked cities in the Midwest.

Dataset only goes back to 1960
In CT 5 days in 1960 > 90°
Today 5 days > 90°

So, I gets Climate Change is "Fake News" ;)

Yeah, great model NYT

Here’s why this caught my attention. I was born in Savannah, GA. In 1960, 69 days of 90s. Today, 92. By 2040? 106. That’s about a 50% increase. Savannah was and is pretty hot as is. Most fair minded people understand weather varies across a country as big as America.

Cold here in Berkeley CA, no 90's this year at all, hardly any days with 80+.

Read my post before accepting that tool's results. A five minute Google search shows the inaccuracy of the data they use.

I did this for fun and games... And it looked scary!

BORN: 85 days over 90
TODAY: 135 days over 90

But I also looked up the population growth and the city I live in has grown 3 fold! From 935,000 to more than 2,700,000 today.

2,700,000 with very little planning and infrastructure to combat car traffic and people pollution....

This has been an extremely uncomfortable summer in NYC, and I know that it's only going to get worse in the future.

I've been trying to convince myself that I love riding in extreme heat and humidity, but my body refuses to listen.
