Suppose someone who in other ways is smart, did something dumb and ordered brakes for a rain/beater/commuter bike and neglected to note that the frame was not set up for recessed brakes on the brake bridge.

What does one do to get around this problem? One obvious answer is to buy another brake--a non-recessed brake. Aside from that, any suggestions?

The irony of my two signatures (below) makes me smile.

I'm not sure if this will solve the problem or not but have you seen these (http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/webalog/brakes/15052.html)

drill a 5/16" hole in the fork and counterbore
it with an $8 tool from home depot. for the
rear bridge, a straight 5/16" hole will do as
the allen key fitting will support the 1/4"
brake bolt atmo.

Frank, thanks, but that's the reverse problem.

atmo, thanks, that solves it. I was going to drill, but didn't know if that was bad. Fork is a replacement fork, ordered at the same time, so it matches.

TT (hee, hee, I said titty) these are cheap bike parts, hence the no-invite.
Ken Robb, thanks, I'll check it out.

less elegant, and not inexpensiveunles you have anoher brakest around, but you could use a(nother) front brake and some of those half carved out spacers that used to come with brakes... maybe try loose screws for those?

exteme snipcounterboreCounterbore...isn't that a regular feature on C-Span?

But seriously, thanks flydhest for asking that question, and ATMO for the tip, I have a frame in the same situation and I was debating what to do with it.

The rain bike is a '74 Witcomb designed with for nutted brakes. The Shimano 600's single pivots on it constantly go out of adjustment. Thanks for the tip Atmo! Gotta get some Tektro long reach brakes!
