When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Wanda Johnson*, taught our class a helpful spelling tip that I have never forgotten. One of our spelling words was "separate". Many people often misspell this word with an e before the r, but if you are ever stumped, remember that there is always "a rat" when two people separate.

*Mr. and Mrs. Johnson separated later that year, and we had a substitute teacher for a couple of weeks. :(

.....or when it sounds like "A" as in neighbor or weigh.

Not if you're an English teacher and have to read a hundred papers in which "definitely" is always "defiantly".

Sitting here in the glass house, I offer you this rock.

Similar pairs...for example: then or than

Then: at that time; soon after that or next in order of time; in addition; in that case.
Sandy rode down the street then turned left at the corner.

Than: function word to indicate the second member as the point of departure in a comparison expressive of inequality.
Sandy would rather ride his OttRott than his CSi.

I got my CSi in 1998. I liked it better then than now. :)

There always getting they're panties in a bunch over their.

I am a serial comma user. I have to parse my sentences over and over and I still, get it wrong.

I like apostrophes. This morning when I was buying my coffee I saw "Todays soup's" in the cafeteria. They got mad when I grabbed the whiteboard and started slamming my forehead with it.
