Few people can claim to be as inextricably linked with the birth of mountain biking as Gary Fisher. His company MountainBikes produced what were arguably the very first production mountain bikes, before he went on to found Gary Fisher Bikes, which he later sold to Trek. Though Trek has stopped producing bikes under the Fisher name, they have retained him as an advocate and expert, a wise move given the depth of his knowledge.

i just met him last month at the airport in queretaro mexico of all places...he was there seeing some dealers...super nice in person

We were on the same flight from MSP to Chicago once though he was up in First. Wanted to introduce myself but didn't want to bug him.

I met him at the WMBA Fat Tire Festival at Blue Mountain in Peekskill, NY.

Cool dude, I know he hung out and partied til early in the morning at the lodge, although I wasn't there for that.

He signed my shirt the next day but messed it up cause I think he was still rocked from the night before / maintaining the momentum...

I’ve mentioned in a thread or 2 that I had the opportunity of working at Trek for a couple years doing major event design and execution. Doing so I had the chance of chatting with Gary a number of times. He was on the lighting crew for the Grateful Dead for a bit so we always touched on that. He’s super nice and easily approachable. The photo below was Gary after being given a “gift” by a just slightly inebriated Dutchman after opening night of one of the TrekWorld trade shows. Gary took it in stride. I won’t post any photos of what happened after the gift giver opened the box.

If the mods need to take that photo down OK but it’s the most PG version

brought this poor fella home from my daughter's apartment a few weeks ago. Found the frameset at the co-op rusting away, thought it would be perfect for her to ride around the campus but it ended up just sitting there. It's got huge tire clearance, will easily fit 700x45mm.

dont know if anyone tuned in, but i was able to listen to this on a plane ride yesterday and enjoyed it. at 67 years old, the man is still full of spirit and enthusiasm for bikes and bike design, you can hear it in his voice that after all these years, he's not bored of it at all, he still very excited.

another take away is that he's no retro grouch - he's interested and excited about all the new tech in mtb, not scared of trying new things/concepts that may ultimately be a complete failure and embracing the good stuff.

very cool guy.

also, at 67, he's got a newborn daughter! yikes, that'll keep him young, for sure!

Met him when he visited Davis and Ron in Morgul-Bismark..when Gary Fisher was a brand not owned by Trek..sold a lot of the MTBs..he always looked like his suit was made from draperies from a house of ill repute:).

I remember him as very nice guy, easy to talk to..

I listened to this. Thanks for the tip- I actually ended up listening to all of the frame builder podcasts on the pull.

Gary is an enigma- for sure.

Nutty, but sometimes articulate. Listing to the interview, he certainly knows a lot about the details that go into a nice riding bike.
