Are you like me? Have you spent more hours than you care to admit "exploring" the world via Google Earth? If so, then you've probably got a million and one favorite views. Here's an intriguing location to start with:

50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W

Best viewed from about 6776 ft. eye altitude.

p.s. If you've not yet discovered Google Earth, go here (http://earth.google.com/) for a free download.

Amazing though...
Whose face/profile is that???

Is that real or has the image been altered? I ask because it's not unusual for bored techs to manipulate images or data in the GIS industry. There were several false roads in the first national digital street maps including one shaped like a phallus and another like buttocks as well as an infamous road in Texas labelled "my scrotum stinks".

That's cool, 'though I'm betting on fake.

Yes I've spent way too much time on google earth.

I have no idea whether it's real or been altered, and it was probably not a good example to make my point. I'm endlessly fascinated by patterns that repeat -- on all scales -- throughout the natural world.

I've also heard of geologists who are using Google Earth to identify impact craters that have been hiding in full view, so to speak. Look at the cratered lunar surface. Now, imagine that the earth has been struck with the same number of objects. Of course, the active nature of the earth (weathering, plate tectonics, etc.) has "erased" some of the evidence, but not all of it.

ok, enough pedantry on my part. I'll return to focusing on more important things, like the Dia de los Muertos celebration that will take place in the zeroking household tomorrow.

Well, it's at least clearer then the one on Mars.

Contemplating that most bored people don't move to far to tag things...

Hey William...what have you been googling?

That's oogling not googling Keith...and he seems to be spending lots of time doing it and sharing it with the forum. Aren't you all so lucky? Tons of bike content in that shot.

Something like that.

Actually, I do have bike content for the thread. Google Earth is handy when trying to figure out a commute route, using it I can see where subdivisions butt up against one another and where the sidewalks between them are so I can avoid the heavy traffic roads if I want.

I noticed that the maps are outdated (few years are common) for free Google Earth. Not sure if Google will ever update the map. Their paid version is up to date though (from what I was told)

Just an FYI....

according to their website:
Note: While there are additional capabilities and features available in Google Earth Pro, the underlying imagery is the same for all versions of Google Earth.

The imagery source, date, resolution, and general quality is highly variable. Its a hodgepodge of data cobbled together on the fly.
