I was recently watching an episode of fantomworks on Tv and they were bitchin' about a guy who wanted his paint preserved, not repainted, and there were all the typical little stone chips in the paint. They painstakingly did touch-up, sand, and polish on each chip. I have a '79 muscle car 100% original including paint, but with several such chips, the bases of which are starting to rust. I've done a quick google search in my area for chip repair and got nothing, so wondered if anyone has tackled this. I used factory touch up in high school, but it really wasn't a professional look and i wondered if i could just use "rust converter" stuff and rub the base of the chip carefully with that until i eventually find a place that knows or is willing to do this.
thanks
jim

I have a local guy I use to paint my bikes. I have purchased a few and he was able to blend in areas that have chips and scratches so that you cannot even tell that there was ever a chip/scratch. He also removed a "name" from a frame.

My painter used to work for a large automobile customizer/restorer and his job was to make the paint "perfect" and to fix chips/scratches after delivery so I think any really competent painter can do it, but the labor is what will get you. It is likely better if you have an area of chips to mask, sand, prime, respray. I think touching up individual chips would be horrendously expensive.

My 2 cents

Just cover the chips with Dancing Banana stickers. Dave Thompson probably still has a bunch. :)

I harder thing to do with chips is to cover the hole left by the chip. once that is done apply the paint, sand and polish is not a big issue if you have exactly the matching paint.

I've had good results with a Langka Paint Chip Repair Kit. If you've got the right shade of touch up paint, it smooths the surface.

I've used this too, back in the day. Its an interesting approach.

Talk to upscale new/used car dealers. Many of them use independent folks who do superlative chip and stone repair, match the color to your car (eg deling with sun fade, etc).

that youtube is good, but i've got at least a dozen+ chips and doubt i'd have the time, steady hand, and patience. I hope i can find someone who can do a good job.

I’d recommend reaching out to them. Seems like they’ve had this request before: https://www.drcolorchip.com/faq/older-cars-and-custom-color-matching.php
