So on a 12x142mm thru axle that 142 refers to hub width. So the axle itself is longer. It looks like ranging from 150mm to 170mm. How do I tell what to use?

That seems like a very high upper bound to me. With no info except the ability to measure a frame what should I be looking for? It's not like the drops are crazy thick.

Measure your current axle or the drops.

The reason for different lengths is to account for different drop out thicknesses.

Also make sure you buy the correct thread pitch.

Lastly make sure you measure the threaded portion as well and get enough threads

Paul has a guide and instructions:

usually the maxles come with the frame/fork.

Check out Robert Axle Project, they have a fit finder that covers damn near every production bike. If you've got a custom bike you might have to call. Good products as well, I've got them in a few of my bikes.

+1 to above.

Another interesting product that was announced recently but I have no experience with is HexLox's adjustable TA.
