I just got back from a ride where I stopped at an LBS. The manager showed me a 3 year old Bell Mtn. Helmet that a customer had just replaced. Before tossing it in the trash he smacked it on his bench to make sure it wasn't resurrected. Under the shiny hard shell there were strips of fiber-reinforced translucent packing tape that looked like the Scotch stuff you would use on a cardboard box running along the top of the foam. My guess is it's to keep the foam more or less in place when the outer shell gets broken. I dion't se anything wrong with this but it is kind of funny to imagine flying fingers taping all the helmets before the shell goes on.
