View Full Version : Lawson Craddock - chapeau

Sometime after the team time trial, I watched LC struggling along off the back, clearly in pain from his fractured scapula, and asked in a Tour stage thread- "what's the point of all this suffering.". Well, Craddock kept plugging along, didn't miss any time cuts, and managed to raise $200,000 for the Harvey-ravaged velodrome in Houston.

My cynicsm was wrong, and Craddock exemplifies everything that can be good about this sometimes farcical, sometimes corrupt sport.

Chapeau, Lawson Craddock.

he's a gamer for sure.
they've been following this story since the day after his crash on The Move podcast so i, too, have been following it secondhand. that, plus the breakfast with bos (ian boswell) and sometimes the cyclingtips podcasts have made the tour experience much more interesting this year.

Exactly - he's my hero for this Tour.

The articles keep saying that he took last place and I get that....but he beat 34ish others who didn't make the final finish line.

That kid rocks.

He exhibited all the qualities we value in a competitor: grit, determination, perseverance, focus, will, selflessness and the desire to succeed.

Here is a nice article about his physio during the tour.

5 didn't make the time cut, 28 abandoned due to injuries, illness and other reasons and 1 punched a Frenchman. Along with Craddock, as we know there were a number of "riding wounded" such as Sagan and Phinney. How about Gilbert riding 60km with a fractured kneecap to finish stage 17? Pro cycling is a tough sport.

Great work suffering through the pain.

BUT, he could have just waited for me to win the Powerball. I was gonna build a new (indoor) track in Houston, Austin and Dallas, along with my home town, Lafayette and New Orleans and Little Rock.

Lawson has some serious intestinal fortitude to endure what he did for an entire Tour.

nice to see a Texan in the pros who's a stand-up guy...

I donated my daily amount to his charity for the full 21 days 15 days ago. I was totally impressed at that time. Glad he made the full 21 days.

It would have been fun to see what he could do. EF's whole tour was pretty much a throw away anyway. The one stage, in hindsight, they were primed to compete for was the Roubaix stage with Phinney and Van Marcke, and they had those guys escorting Uran.

Two years with a proper coach, I hope he comes out and crushes it next year.

Every time they put the camera on him for many days after the crash, the kid looked really uncomfortable.

He could not hang on in the team time trial.

It was only later in the race that the #13 disappeared from the very end of the peloton and rode IN the peloton.

I would be shocked if the kid took anything he wasn't supposed to, given the scrutiny/notoriety around his situation.

If someone crashed and broke their scapula would they not be prescribed some sort of pain killer legally?

Don't think anything other than OTC type stuff like Aspirin, Ibuprofen type stuff

Tramadol is still considered legit by the UCI and supposedly will be banned in 2019.

He represented his Whoot sponsor well too. How many here checked it out and might buy? Either way..I like the story and his effort.
Would he have gotten the same exposure if he finished in the bunch? Hummmm

Just an aside Whoop is a great tool. I found it really effective when I was traveling a ton on business as much as for fitness/training.

I broke my scapula in a bike wreck when I was 20. You can ride without much pain after a day or two I dont know how he did it for the first couple of days after the accident.

If JV were smart, he'd get this on 60 Minutes. It's a great story!
