Help with Serotta Legend Ti

Hey Guy's,

I picked this bike up for a steal of deal. 2002 Legend Ti 60cm, with custom geometry (575mm top tube vs. 585 mm).

Overall it's in great shape, but plan on stripping off the 9spd 7700 Dura Ace groupset and fitting it with newer 11spd Chorus or R8000, plus add some nicer wheels.

How wide can I go with the wheels (I was hoping for C17 Campy with 25mm tires)?

The glue for the fork insert is old and doesn't hold anymore. Does the F2 fork need anything special for an insert?

I test road it for the first time last night around the block. Very nice riding bike. Maybe I've been riding bigger diameter tubes for too long, but I'm surprised by how small the diameter is on the top and down tube. Is that normal for the era?

Reynolds forks do not use glue, just use a Reynolds expansion plug.

I have a 2004 Legend with the F2 fork it looks to me like there is plenty of room to run 25mm tires....I think it was the old F1 forks were a tight fit with wider tires.

I am surprised to hear about "old glue" not holding....I thought the insert was held in with an epoxy?? You could probably just clean it up and re-glue it.

I have the F2 forks on both my CSI and my Legend....I watched the mechanic glue the insert into the fork on my CSI, but my Legend has an expansion plug.

Apparently they both work.

Regarding the tubes, the Legends where all custom bikes so maybe yours got smaller tubes...I always liked how "fat" mine looked. They are tapered however and where they join at the seat cluster are a smaller diameter.

They are great bikes and I am sure you will love yours!

I have a Legend the same age, also with an F2, although mine has an ST rear. I use 700x25 GP4000, mounted to a 23mm wide rim, which measure out to 27 1/2 mm actual width, and they fit. There isn't much room to spare, but they fit.

My glued-in plug also unglued and I have had two expansion plugs since, a Reynolds and and Origin 8, both of worked just fine.

Its a great bike, ride the heck out of it.

Not trying to be argumentative but not ALL Legends were custom. I had a stock 60cm. There were LOTS of custom Legends because there was no extra charge to go custom so even people who would have been well-served by a stock Legend might have felt compelled to take advantage of that perk even if it was only to get an extended head tube. :)

you're right...I forgot they had a "stock" option. It was so long ago!:rolleyes:

I have a stock 56cm square. My favorite bike.

I run 25mm Conti GP4KS2...and they're maxed.

Currently running Vittoria Pave 27mm tires with DT 411 rims with no problems.

My Reynolds compression plug is not glued.

Bumping thread for a related question:

Is anyone running HED plus-width wheels (or equivalent-width wheels) on their Legend? If so, how much clearance do you have and what has been the max tire size you've been able to use?

as others have stated, those forks had a glue in insert.

The tt probably has a stock "colorado concept" top tube. On those bikes, if the rider was heavier or wanted a stiffer front end the spec'd tt would be an OS straight, butted ti tube, not swaged. Unless the person who originally built your bike was 6' and ~150lbs and very little power output, it's probably the standard tt/dt.

I never liked the reynolds compression plug because it uses an integrated top cap as a bolt design. at best I could get the compression right but it always bugged me when the cap lettering wasnt aligned. maybe those with less OCD are ok. and yes I know there is a bolt with a different size inside the cap

default easy answer is order up an enve plug.

Well, dang it! I live on Maui where this bike was listed on Craig's List. I didn't see the post in time and, poof, it was gone. Glad to see it is in good hands and getting the TLC it deserves.
