View Full Version : Handlebars that play nice with Campagnolo levers?

Hi Y'all, I've know I've seen the question come up a while ago, but couldn't seem to find the thread. I've got some 15 year old carbon Easton bars that I'm wanting to replace, but I like how those bars fit my 10-speed Record levers, in that the top of the bar makes a nice, smooth, flat transition into the top of the brake hood/lever. I'm moving up to SR 11S, not sure how similar the feel of that lever is to 10S.

What are some recommendations for brands/models that keep to that same type of design philosophy? Given that the rest of the bike (Serotta Legend Ti) is Campy, is there some Italian brand I'm supposed to look at? :=)

Which Easton bars do you have? I have found the various Deda RHM-style bars are a similar shape to some of the Easton's. They are a compact design with short reach and moderate drop and a flat transition. The Deda bars I found work well with the campy levers 10 and 11.

Thanks. They say 'EC90'. I wouldn't say they are compact, almost more of a classic bend.

Ritchey WSC EvoCurve works fine for me. Great transition to the grips, nice smooth and flat place for your hands.

+1 on Deda.
I own Newtons (Shallow and Deep) and really like the way they mate up.

Can't say for a particular brand but my bike fitter says ('cuz I have the same issue) that a good compact bar is what you want as it places the levers closer.

I have. Williams elan carbon on my Ottrott. Light and compact. Works well with record 11 speed.

I like my FSA Energy Wing Compact. Shallow so I can reach the thumb lever. Flat top for some added comfort. Also has a slight flare so a size 42 is really a 40 at the hoods but 42 at the ends.

Thanks for the suggestions, thus far, Y'all. The more I start researching this, the deeper of a well it proves. Maybe this next question deserves it's own thread, and maybe there's already many threads on this topic, and I didn't begin to understand it until now, but my old bars seem to be 'dropier' and 'reacher' than what seems to be popular these days, so what 'shape' are you young'uns riding these days and why? I've borrowed this image from Deda's catalog for reference. Seems like that more compact style is Deda's most used, for example.

I like traditional (see "Shallow" and "Deep" above) and round bend shapes (think Ritchey NeoClassic) because my fingers can actually reach the levers when my presidentially-sized hands are in the drops.

I have a set of Deda Newton Shallows available cheap (31.8 clamp, 42cm c-c) if you are interested.

You kind of have to decide if classic bend or a flat transition is your preference. Classic bend (and Italian) when set up in the classic manner means a bit of a down slope to the hoods. The Deda illustration shows that stem adjustment may be necessary when shifting between bar types.

Thanks for the input, Y’all. I’ve decided to order the Deda M35 with the more compact design. It’ll be interesting to see the comparison between the two different curves.

I have the Ritchey evo curve and the transition is smoother then my other bike with enve compact bars. (SR11 from 2010-2012)

The Easton EC90 should be a short reach and shallow drop bar. I have them, that date back at least 10 years. They work well with Campy 11 levers.

They also make the slightly heavier and cheaper EC70 model with the same bend. I just got a pair for $150.
