Jeez 74 hotdogs with buns. Thats serious numbers man. Hard to imagine.
I once ate 14 cheeseburgers to beat a friends record and i feelt really really really bad after that and it took a long time or at least felt like it :)

Let's see....we started with 100 hot dogs...too hard to count them being eaten....how many are left?...would that tell us how many were eaten?

Major League Eating president: We were embarrassed:

that we left our calculator at home...
10% of the world population does not have enough to eat
gluttony is considered a sport
ad nauseum....

pass the pepto

How about eating donuts then riding the bike?

Last year's winner, Bradley Meinke, of Chicago, came in 123rd in actual time in the men's under 40 class, at 2:19:54, but ate a whopping 33 donuts for an adjusted time of -25:06, meaning he sort of won the race almost one-half hour before the start.

No kidding.
I really thought this was a joke when I saw it on Yahoo earlier today.

Yes, besides the incredibly self-indulgent bad taste, with people struggling for food just miles away in NYC and everywhere beyond; the presumably dangerous personal health risks; and that this is a televised thing!]

I agree. With so many people in the country/world starving or having trouble getting food, eating contests are an absolute disgrace, imo. I've always hated them, they're disgusting no matter how you look at them.

I agree, but one could extend this to so many other competitive or leisure activities, so it's hard to know where to draw the line. For example, think of all the resources wasted on F-1 / NASCAR / whatever auto racing.

There are countless other activities along the spectrum from "total waste" to "may help us find a cure for cancer" or "will help us fight world hunger."

Following their second NBA championship in a row and third in four years, the Golden State Warriors spared no expense on Friday night.

According to TMZ Sports, the Dubs celebrated with more than $400,000 worth of champagne in the locker room after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers thanks to a 108-85 win in Game 4.Imagine if instead of spraying $400,000 worth of champagne around the locker room, they had donated that money to a food pantry in Oakland.

Think of the massive waste of resources to move nearly 200 cyclists, their management and the press around a country for three weeks! And then multiply it by three! OMG, the amount of money spent just to fuel one team car in a day is more than many families earn in a year in the rest of the world.

Arbitrary lines can be drawn anywhere.

No. What makes eating contests different is that they are purely about gorging oneself on food. And their only purpose is gorging. Not the same thing at all as a bike race - even an over the top one like the TDF.

There is a distinction between the two activities, but to the starving kid in XYZ does it make a difference how the resources were wasted?

His / her stomach is still empty.

But what about proportionality? There were around 10 men and 10 women that ate around 30 dogs on average. You are complaining about 600 hot dogs in the context of world hunger. My example was millions of dollars in each of three national races. What about the CO2 contribution? Think of the children.

I'm pretty sure I can draw better arbitrary lines of justification than you can.

Won't someone think of the children who 74 hotdogs could have fed for maybe a couple days but not been a drop in the bucket towards the systemic, global and crippling issue of hunger.

Lawd I'm feeling faint...

Agreed, I am lying on the bed at 4:30 pm reading Paceline. Talk about a massive waste of resource. I can only imagine how many calories I have wasted riding my bike for pleasure instead creating something great.

BTW we are eating organic hotdogs tonight for dinner.

I hope they're veggie-dogs - veggies are a much more efficient way to get nutrition than meat. ;)
