''Today a friend and I did a new route east of the mountains. It was a thoroughly Eroica-caliber route so I wore my Eroica jersey and rode my most hard-core vintage off-road bike, my 50s (pre-Lejeune) Sauvage, now with 650 x 48 Pacenti tires by Panaracer. They worked great. My friend rode an off topic mountain bike but I kept up with him just fine. The ride was 46 miles and climbed 3400 feet. The first 16 miles starting at the railroad museum in Cle Elum was on the John Wayne trail, a flat gravel rail-trail along the river. Then about ten miles of pavement, gradually climbing up Taneum Creek Canyon, into a stiff headwind. Pronounced by the locals Tane-um. The climb turned to gravel and escalated to a steady 4-5% to the top of Cle Elum Ridge at about 4050 feet. We did a little side trip to a rocky promontory called Peoh Point (just like it sounds), with a sweeping view of the valley 2000 feet below. Then a final steep 10 mile gravel downhill back to Cle Elum. Wow, I am really beat from this. My friend put together this Relive movie of the ride''

Cool...I head to Cle Elum a couple times a year with the family for vacation. This looks fun.

Thanks for posting. Ridden the Iron Horse/John Wayne trail on a road bike with 28c tires. Difficult to tell from the photos if 28c tires would be okay for the rest of the route? May tackle this on July 4.
