With all the threads about music lately, I decided to start one of my own. Does anyone have any songs that they think are upbeat and instantly get happy when they hear them? I can think of four offhand that do that for me.
The Happening-Supremes
Friday On My Mind-Easy Beats
Summer In The City-Lovin' Spoonful
Paper Sun-Traffic

Any others out there???

Build Me Up Buttercup
The Foundations

Why do you build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup baby just to
let me down (Let me down)
And mess me around
And then worst of all (Worst of all)
You never call baby
When you say you will (Say you will)
But I love you still
I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup
Don't break my heart

Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Where did all the blue sky go?
Poison is the wind that blows
From the north, east, south, and sea
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Radiation in the ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land?
How much more abuse from man can you stand?
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord

bro duke and pops

"I'm Just A Lucky So And So"

When I walk down the street
Seems everyone I meet
Gives me a friendly hello
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

The birds in every tree
All sing so merrily
They sing wherever I go
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

Well if you should ask me the amount in my bank account
I must confess that I'm slipping
But that don't bother me, cause confidentially
I've got a dream that's pippin

And when my day is through
Each night I hurry to
A love that's faithful I know
I guess I'm just a lucky so an so

cheers

This was the first pop song that left me shaking my head in wonder at the logic and beauty of music. I might have been 9 at the time, but the feeling comes back to me whenever I'm lucky enough to hear it. No cynicism here, atmo:

Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)

She ain't got no money
Her clothes are kinda funny
Her hair is kinda wild and free
Oh, but love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me

She talks kinda lazy
And people say she she's crazy
And her life's a mystery
Oh, but love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me

There's something about her hand holding mine
It's a feeling that's fine
And I just gotta say
She's really got a magical spell
And it's working so well
That I can't get away

I'm a lucky fella
And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly
Because love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me

[Fadeout:]
It keeps growing every place she's been
And nobody knows like me

If you've met her, you'll never forget her
And nobody knows like me

La la la- believe it when you've seen it
Nobody knows like me

"When You Wake Up Feeling Old"
WILCO

When you wake up
Feelin old
At this piano filled with souls
Some strange purse
Stuffed nervous with gold
Can you be where you want to be?

Walk down any street
You can find
Look at any clock telling time
Sing some strange verse
From some strange song of vines
And youll be where you want to be

I know I can't sing
Until she brings the song to life
And I blend with kings
Id never change a thing

Who knows anything
I don't know
There are so many things
I must leave alone
Some strange person is calling you their home
Can you be where you want to be?

Can you be
Where you want to be?
Can you be
Where you want to be?
Can you be
Where you want to be?

You gotta love a singer that uses a made up language known as "Hopelandic"

Great one Wayne 77.

You gotta love a singer that uses a made up language known as "Hopelandic"

He certainly has an interesting voice, though I think their last album switched back to Icelandic - (not that I could tell a difference!)

I saw them at the Depot in SLC a few months ago. Great show - they'll be around for a long time.

You mentioned Wilco - "Heavy Metal Drummer" is another great "happy" song

ICE CREAM MAN

Hi there, everybody. We're the Modern Lovers
We're gonna sing about the ice cream man for you
Well now, ice cream man, upon my street
I heard your truck outside, it's really neat
Ice cream man, upon my block
Your little chimes, they reel and they rock
Ice cream man, ring your bell
Play the music I've learned to love so well
Ice cream man, ring your chimes
In the afternoon so fine
Ice cream man, upon my street
I heard your truck today, it was a-neat, a-neat, a-neat
Ice cream man, upon my block now
Your chimes, they reel and rock
Now, ice cream man, upon my street
Your little truck, you know, is a-neat, neat
And ice cream man, upon my block
I heard your chimes, I know they reel and they rock
Ice cream man, on my street
Your little truck, you know, is a-neat, a-neat, a-neat
Ice cream man, upon my block
Your chimes, your chimes, they reel and rock
Ice cream man, upon my street
You heard your truck today, it's neat, neat
Ice cream man, ring your chimes In the afternoon so fine
One more time...
Ice cream man, ring your bell
Play the music I've learned to love
Ice cream man, ring your chime
In the afternoon so fine.

THINK I'LL CALL IT MORNING
by GIL SCOTT-HERON from the album Pieces of a Man

I'm gonna take myself a peice of sunshine
And paint it all over my sky
Be no rain..
Be no rain..

I'm gonna take the song from every bird
And make em sing it just for me
Bird's got something to teach us all
About bein free, yeah
Be no rain..
Be no rain..

And I think I'll call it morning
From now on
Why should I survive on sadness
And tell myself I got to be alone
Why should I subscribe to this world's madness
Knowing that I've got to live on ( 3 times)
Yeah I think I'll call it morning
From now on

I'm gonna take the song from every bird
and make em sing it just for me
Cause why should I hang my head
Why should I let tears fall from my eyes
When I've seen everything there is to see
And I know there is no sense in crying
I know there ain't no sense in cryin
Yeah I think I'll call it morning
From now on
I'll call it morning from now on, yeah

Cause there ain't gonna be no rain
be no rain
be no rain
from now on...
