Moved a Record Triple 10 group onto the Ellis this evening and am just curious what the recommended rear cluster is for such..

It's 30/42/52 and I've got 13-26 out back.

Is that pretty much the normal combo? 12/25? 13/29?

Also, shifts super clean with the Veloce 10 ergos I had on there for the 2x Record setup. Campy 10 is so much perfection. The high water mark before the tide started ebbing...

I also like riding a triple, especially for my travel bike. For flat to rolling, I use a 10's 30-42-52 (not 53) with 13-26. If very hilly.....change it to a 13-29 or 12-30....or a combination of 13-30. And have always liked bikes with large chainrings 10 teeth apart. Just like how they shift, and with triple really like how the chain line works out. Going down hill fast not much of a priority for me.

Currently have a new 10's Campy Comp triple crankset on shelf of 30-40-50. Haven't decided which bike to put it on. (or if I will) Have toyed with idea of using a TA Vento 28-40 and a Campy 50 (50/40) for some really long steep stuff or to just make life easier on any hills.

At my age 77, not as strong as I used to be.....but still manage. But main thing is why struggle? Got parts to ride anywhere....why not use them?

A riding bud has this 8-speed Racing Triple group and he uses a 13-26 cassette. The gear ratios seem to work for him and the group is reliable as hell. I talked him into this Bilenky when it was offered for sale a few years ago and had it fit me, he wouldn't have gotten the call.

This is a nice machine!

I run a 13-29 and changed the rings to 28/39/48 on mine. I like the set up a lot.

What's 'normal' is what's normal for you..no answer to your question.

OBTW-if you ARE the 30 small ring, 26t in back...Campag 11s...34 small ring and 29 to 32 in back...Plus very ergonomic levers and much more durable innards..so...yup, I like 11s 'stuff'. :)

I've begun setting up with a 50/40/30 with a 13-26, but will move to a 12-2x once I'm swapped over. This way I can run a medium cage, and like Ralph. I'm not bombing down hills these days so not having the high end is not a problem.

One bike will get a setup more like yours with a Chorus 53-42-30 (I think--could be 52-42-30) with the 13-29 and long cage and I will see how I like that as a comparison.

After years of fiddling around, I settled on 52-39-26 with an 11-32 on the back for my road bikes, and a 11-34 on the back on my touring bike. It took me a while to find the right mix of parts to make it work, but it works well now and I have it on 4 bikes. (M750 rear derailluer and 6603 triple with a 26 swapped out of the 30; 7803/6603/bar ends all work equally well; also use a chain guard in case the chain skips over the 26).

My goal is to have at least one gear left that I don't use on a normal ride, preferably 2, so when I get to something that is over 10% grade or into winds over 30 MPH, I have something left.

On a typical day on my normal loop, I'll use the 52-11 and the 26-28.

you are correct about the range of the 11 being able to cover the triple range. Heck, you can almost get a triple range from a 1x12 these days. When I switch between wide range doubles and triples I do think I notice the smaller gaps between the gears on the tighter cassette. I don't think this is a huge performance gain but I do like it.

Starting this thread was worth it just to see that Bilenky :hello:

30x26 is a nice spinning gear for the 10-12% hills. It does feel like a 34/29 or 34/32. BUT - putting it in that middle 42 and being able to cruise around at 14-20mph is just about perfect. None of that back n' forth between the 34 and the 50...

I think I'll throw the 13/29 on there tonight though. Got a beastly ride on Saturday and I'm thinking of seeing what bigger rubber I can get on the Ellis to help tame the roads. Bigger rubber needs lower gears.

I'm running a Record 53/42/30 with the Wheels Manufacturing 11-27 10 speed cassette made out of Ultegra cogs. It works great and I like the range. Looking at their website it appears they don't make the 10 or 11 speed conversion cassettes anymore. Boo. That would mean a jtek shiftmate later on down the road.

The 42t ring does solve a lot of the complaints of having to shift between the 50 and 34 on a compact. Just don't use it too much and ignore the outer ring. Fast people are simply fast, it doesn't matter if they are on a 50t or 53t outer ring. Sometimes I get lazy and stay in the 42t when I should really be in the 53t.

I also have a few 32t Campagnolo chain rings for when I want a slightly harder granny ring.

I use a 30,42,50 paired with a 12-30 ( Now that I have a functioning rear triple derailleur, Thanks for saving me.) I really like this combo for my all around bike especially on those old logging roads which can be quite steep. Triples do still have there place but for my regular road bike I still prefer a 34,50 with a 12-29.
Have a great day
