Reigning World and Olympic sprint cycling champion Kristina Vogel was in a serious condition Tuesday after a training crash left her needing to be airlifted to a hospital in Berlin.

Vogel is one of track cycling's all-time greats with 16 major tournament gold medals to her name — including triumphs at the last two Olympic Games.

The German — a record 11-time world champion — will undergo surgery Wednesday in Berlin after colliding with another rider during a training camp in Cottbus.

"We are shocked," a German Cycling Federation statement read on Facebook. "Kristina Vogel was seriously injured during training on the track in Cottbus today.

"She collided at full speed with another racer who was also training on the racecourse. Kristina is being flown to Berlin and will be operated on in the next few hours.

"Dear Kristina, we all keep our fingers crossed for you."

German media report that she suffered spinal injuries and that her condition is critical

Awful news.

She's an avid Instagrammer with a great feed of photos, stories and life in the pro track world stuff. Last post was two days ago and I was wondering what was going on.

Fingers crossed on a speedy recovery.

Wasn't she very badly hurt and in a coma some years ago?

Indeed, she was hit by a police vehicle in 2009 and was in a coma for two days. Says here she collided with a Dutch junior rider at full speed and that doctors operated on spinal injuries for several hours last night. She is currently in IC and there have been no updates on her condition yet

At this point given the radio silence, I'd be happy to hear she can walk again, much less race or ride.

My thoughts EXACTLY. Screw the bike. I want to hear she isn't paralyzed.

Its probably still a bit early to tell. I severely contused my spinal cord at c4 in a m/c accident in 2010. I was completely quadriplegic for 2-3 weeks and it took several months of pt before I could walk. Got back on a bike a year or so later, can now ride normally.

The radio silence is disturbing, but its better than knowing for sure that she doesn't have the prospect of a full recovery.

Thanks, but bravery had nothing to do with it. Stupidity got me there. Luckily I was reasonably fit from a lifetime of cycling, and was able to recover fairly quickly. PT is hard work, but when you get a glimpse of a future of immobility, your animal brain takes over and you'll do what needs to be done.

Unfortunately rather bad news...

Headline from an article in "Der Spiegel":

"Kristina Vogel about being paraplegic: 'Excuse me. I am actually not crying.'

Kristina Vogel, 27, talks for the first time about her tragic accident two months ago - and why it makes no sense to ask yourself 'Why me?'".

Unfortunately, the rest of the article requires a paid subscription but based on the headline it sounds like she's trying to make the best out of it.

Martyn Ashton is in the same situation.

Cycling is a dangerous sport. Of course, this is is not news to anyone here.

Having had a 'burst' fracture of C6 back in 2015 (as well as several thoracic spine and lumbar spine fractures) I am thankful each and every single day that I'm not riding a chair.

Perhaps she may start racing again, it will just be of a different type. Sounds like she has a good outlook and is learning to accept the new normal.

"Now I can say I have reached a point where I can say: here I am and I am fine. I am still the same crazy person. I want to be a source of motivation for others."

I'm sure she is already a source of motivation for many.

Kristina Vogel is surely a very strong person, and will continue to grow as she was doing before. She did not achieve what she did by being weak or afraid, lazy, and her future will not be negative determined by this incident either.

This is real life and not some abstract cosmic cruelty. There are so many other people, of all kinds with so many accidents, whose courage then is far greater than their circumstances.

Alex Zanardi, for instance; and he is only one of many.

Kristina Vogel is and will be always another great champion, like Zanardi, of sport but mainly of life. She will surely be a great example and teacher.
