View Full Version : How do you carry tools on your ride? Saddle roll, tool canister, jersey?

Revised: How do you carry tools and what do you use to carry them? Bottle cage tool canister, under seat storage or something else?

What tool carrying device do you use and whats in yours? I'm weighing options to carry emergency tools on the bike instead of on my person.

So far the Outvi Possm (https://www.outvi.com/products/mtb-possm) seems most ideal since it stays on the rails but I'm also considering the Velocolour options (http://store.velocolour.com).

Mostly I just carry a tube, multitool, extra masterlink, patch kit and levers maybe. Not sure I need much else.

How and what are you folks packing for your rides generally?

I love my ile tool bag. I have had many rolls and this is by far my favorite since you can acess the tools without having to remove it from the bike.

In it I have multitool, a tube, quicklink, tire lever and carbon paste (I have had seatpost slippage ruin a ride so never again)

I fit a Pedro's multi tool with chain tool, tire lever and road or CX tube inside. Cash, ID, and patches of I needed too.

Tube, tire lever, patch kit, pedros multi+chain tool, Co2 inflator, master link, ID card with med info, and some cash. Also carry a small Lezyne pump on the bike.

Haha thanks. Since that was more focused on multitools, I wanted something to carry that in besides a jersey pocket. Maybe the subject wasn't worded properly.

So far the ILE bag seems like what I'm looking for though. Not too crazy technical like the Outvi and still simple and secure. Will go check it out this week, thanks!

Not trying to be critical but I also think it depends a LOT of where/what ya ride. Road only, unsupported tour, dirt, gravel, MTB, etc. For road only, I carry a spare tire(tubular), a modified paint can opener, $10 and a cellie in me pocket.
Opener and $10 rolled in spare tire. Only needed a tool once in about 35 years..loose cleat. And if ya research my posts, one other thing...:)

posted in the other thread, but i'll put the rundown and pic here too:

-everything in the small rapha essentials case.
-silca multi-tool
-mini leatherman with pliers. used this dozens of times, various uses.
-plastic tire lever
-spoke key - have definitely trued up wheels on the road that took major hits to prevent brake rub and make it home.
-spare tube
-either lezyne mini-pump or frame pump, depending on bike.

(if i'm riding tubulars, i carry a mini bottle of sealant, and if i'm riding tubies and going long/far, i carry a spare pre-glued tire)

Every bike of mine has a saddlebag (Arundel Dual on the two "good" bikes, Arkel Waterproof on the commuter/foul weather bike) containing two tubes, two tire levers, and one multi-tool. There might be a spare KMC masterlink and/or a couple CR2032 batteries for my odometer buried in there too, but that's a surprise rather than me being intentionally prudent.

Pumps are all clipped onto the side of the bottle-cage via a Blackburn CK-1 (?) mount.

Only things in my pockets are phone, wallet, keys, & food.

What was the question?

chiasticon

it depends...

summer road: Silca Premio w/tube, lever, patch kit, boot, park tool MT-1. frame pump on the bike.

winter road or cyclocross riding: same as above, but in a lezyne cargo bottle dealie. I don't need two bottles in these situations and seat bags are annoying when you wash your bike frequently. oh and I swap multi-tools for a lezyne SRV10 and add a chain quick link.

MTB: same as cyclocross kit, but with a MTB specific tube and a large volume hand pump in the pocket instead of frame pump.

Every bolt on my bike that I might need to adjust while out on a ride - stem, seat post and clamp, cleat bolts - are all 4mm hex heads, by design. So other than a spare tub and co2 under my saddle, all I take is a 4mm bit and Prestaflate ratchet in my back pocket. Keepin' it simple.

I'm surprised there isn't more of this. Also, would be very curious to do a survey of what repairs actually occur out on the road, and what tool was needed.

Limit screws are one that I could see needing to deal with if you have a wheel issue, and they are generally not hex.

in 5 decades, I simply haven't had many breakdowns that required wrenches, screwdrivers, etc...

my roadside repair kit is pretty minimalist, it's basically for just fixing flats. all I carry is:

PDW CO2 inflator
3 16g cartridges
2 plastic tire levers
microfiber cloth (to clean sunglasses)
dollar bills (for spending or tire booting)
glueless patches
ID card

the above goes in one ziploc sandwich bag and 2 tubes in another.

multi tool
patch kit
tube
1 tire lever
co2
silca co2 head
phone
ID
Credit Card
Cash

All go in a saddle bag pouch my friend made.

For longer rides all this plus an extra tube and crap ton of food go in the rando bag.

SWAT, I open the door on the downtube and everything I need fits inside. Runs the whole length and holds way too much. Comes with special rolls with tabs and all that to fish them out. Beauty of carbon, specialized has done it on some carbon mtbs for a while

1 - 2 tubes, 2 20g co2, ultraflate, quick link, crank brothers multi took and the cheapest tire lever you've ever seen. Room for more, usually put my key in there too

Someone once said, "The tools a rider brings with them tells a history of all the things that they have broken on a ride."

In all my years of riding I have only had three items break while on a ride, saddle rail, crank arm, pedal body and pedal spindle. My multi-tool was no help there. No tool really, just need to ride with spare saddle, crank and pedal I suppose.

I don't have a beard or enough tattoos to use a tool roll so it's a small saddle bag for me.

I have been using clear zip-loc bags for awhile together with a Rapha essential bag for ID and phone. I was going to get a tool wrap but tried the zip-loc bags once and was sold on them.

I put the Rapha bag in middle jersey pocket in the event of a crash as it contains no metal bits that might cause back injury.

I use an LG bag with an integrated blinkie. It's small. 2 16gm CO2, Leynze CO2 head, 2 tire levers, multitool with a chain tool, 4 & 5 mm full size wrenches, tube. And duct tape wrapped around a cartridge. It's amazing how that tape comes in handy.

Typically I end up using the tools to help other on the road. It's amazing the number cyclists who don't carry the basics.

Oh! And this year reading glasses in my pocket. Middle age sucks...

In a medium sized seat bag, I carry whatever I'm likely to need on a ride. 2 Tubes, park sidewall patches, some allen tools and a multi tool with chain breaker, tire irons, 3 12 G co2's, quick links, money (doubles for side wall repair), etc. I like Mark's response above.....I carry about anything I have ever needed before, plus what my riding buddies won't carry because of their vanity, or the correct "look" of the bike, and because of the 'weight" thing.

My pockets are for food and phone and spending money.

In my tool roll, under saddle

2 cartridges and head
Tube(sometimes 2)
Chain tool
a few loose allen keys

As noted, i have needed all of the above at some point in time. Plus i have broken a crank arm and saddle rails, that nothing would have helped with

In pocket in a donkey label pack animal case- id, cc, transit card, phone, cash.

it only needs 1oz of water to fill the chamber enough to use it. but even then if you hit it too hard youll get that dirty splash of water on your lips from the inside. that ti pullcarb with no handle means youre burning your fingers too.

- $10
- sunscreen

This is a really good bag. If you rewrap a lightweight tube just right you can fit a ton of stuff in it and the triple wide velcro strap makes it very snug and secure.

Or there's the Velocolour T&T Dynamite roll, which is a roll/bag hybrid and it's one of the best under saddle carrying options around. http://store.velocolour.com/product/dynamite-roll

Topeak makes a version of the Ninja cage with bag below instead of the multi tool holder.

Bag is sized for a single tube, but they also make a larger version for MTB tubes.

You'd be surprised, but then I don't typically ride in extreme wet and muddy conditions. If I do "get caught", I just rinse everything off. No big deal.

I prefer not to carry anything in my jersey pocket other than phone and ride food. I use the Velocolor Bidon Stuff bag in my second water bottle cate with 2 16gm Co2 cartridges, a spare tube, Silca inflator, and a few other items. Under my seat I use a velcro strap to attach another tube and tire levers between the seat rails so there is nothing bulky handing off the back of the bike. I usually find a place to fill up my water bottle while on a ride, so i seldom miss having the second water bottle. If I am doing a ride that I know water isn't available, then I suck it up and use a small bag for the stuff usually put in the Velocolor bag.

I have tried some other water bottle cage carriers and the ones that have screw tops seem to open on their own while the Velocolor bag has a zipper that keeps things secure.

I have a Galaxy 8 phone in an armoured case, a great lump
that needs to go in a bag. I can get notifications on my Wahooooo,

FWIW.....I have awesome straps (which is essentially same thing as whats pictured) and I wrapped mine with some GLAD 'clingwrap' and it helps keep everything together, keeps off the grime, AND is easily accessible in race situation and you don't have to worry about saving it or losing it if you're in hurry to change tube.
