View Full Version : Widest Gravel Tire on Open Pro (clincher)?

I pre-rode the course for a local gravel race this morning and found my Ritchey Speedmax 32 tires inadequate for the loose surface. How wide a tire will safely mount to a Mavic Open Pro clincher rim?

Thanks,
Greg

I ran ksyrium sls with 38 paselas at d2r2 a couple of years ago without issue. I’d imagine you could run that wide on an open pro as well.

As wide as will fit your frame. You'll be fine!

I agree with this. Don McClung built his MTB bikes typically with OP rims. Riders usually ran 2.2" tires on them. There is probably some squirminess at lower pressures, but no rim blow offs. You'll be fine.

Not optimal, but I agree that you should be able to run as wide a tire as your frame and fork will fit.

You'll probably be fine with whatever you use really. I've still got a pair of Mavic 717 XC rims which are probably not much wider that the Open Pro, and I've got 2.3" tyres on them.

MTB rims used to be a whopping 19mm internal and we stuffed 2.1s in there. Don't go tubeless or crazy low pressure and should be good to go.

I have Ritchey Trail Mix 35s on my Open Pros. For years, no problems.

Mountain bikers used to put 2.125 tires on 19mm wide rims and it worked fine, one of those people was me.

Farmer John's, Farmer John Cousin, and Porcupines had no issues. I think, those were 13s or 15s. Too many years have gone by.

Ya, I used to ride these Matrix Mt. Titan rims, really narrow and impossible to get tires on. Ran them with 2.1 tires for years.
