Islands are a pain, I want a Bond-esque gadget to bike on water.

Going from Brooklyn to NJ, southbound (towards Philly). Google maps wants me to take one of the $8 ferries from Manhattan to NJ. I can go way out of my way and cross the George Washington bridge for free. I can take the Staten Island ferry for free then bike across the new Goethals bridge. I can take PATH from Manhattan to NJ for $2.75.

It seems like those last two options are my best bet. Am I missing any others?

Seems like the Staten Island ferry takes longer but obviously free.

Not yet available north of equator, but has passed the long proof of concept phase and now moving into mass production. Looks like fun!!

Yes move up to one of the rivertowns (Hastings, Dobbs, Irvington) and be closer to nice riding.

There’s also NY Waterways ferries to Liberty Park and Hoboken, or NJT trains.

There is a ferry from Manhattan to Atlantic Highlands, NJ that looks like it would avoid all the crappy riding you would find around Newark/Hudson County: seastreak.com (no personal experience). Otherwise, the PATH to Newark Penn Station might not be a bad option. I would not want to try getting from Hoboken/Jersey City inland on a bike.

If you don't want to ride over the George Washington Bridge, I'd recommend taking PATH from the WTC to Newark. From Newark, you can head south towards Elizabeth and then west.

Rode to philly today from Bk. Lovely bits on the canal towpath. Anyways, your best bet is to take path to Harrison. It’s just one stop before Newark and much simpler to walk out of that station and hit the street.

You gotta take path instead of a Hudson ferry because routes 1 and 9 that google maps tells you to use are basically freeways between jersey city and the rest of Jersey.

Ferry to sandy hook is nice too but pricey.

Really excited about the Goethals bridge opening to cyclists! It’ll be a game changer!!
