Big Blue finally acknowledges reality in the MTB world. When the 51t trickles down to XT, I'm in. Jumping up to a 30t chain ring on the bikepacking rig will give a little more push in the flats with just more help on the climbs than I have now at 28.

Much more depth here:

Also finally a direct mount chain ring.

10t small cogs too.

New cassette body. Unlike XD, it has a thin lock ring. Tons of interesting stuff here. Will be really useful when it trickles down to XT.

having a 10t is great...as i have always felt i give up more on the low (small cog) end of the gearing range than the opposite.

Example - i have been riding most of this year on a 1x cx bike on the road (prepping for a trip/race in late june) with 40t x 11-28t (going to 32 or 36 for the actual trip) and while I'm fine on any climb around me, spinning out (over 100rpm) at about 27-28mph is...well, unfortunate. Not a deal breaker obviously but it would be cool to be able to accelerate fully on a long descent. 10t helps with that.

that said...51t is seriously overkill for unloaded riding...

personally, id LOVE to see someone make a 10-36/38t cassette, would be awesome for gravel riding.

yes, a 10-38 or 10-40 would be nicer than the 10-42 for me. I wonder if 3t will ever release their 9-34 or 9-36 or whatever it is. then i could drop to a 40t front and run that...

Will any of this new stuff fit 135 spacing? Will my hardtail be forever stuck in the component past now?

The article says it will fit standard spacing, ie. 135 & 142 (which are the same as far as chainline is concerned)

AFAIK they haven't announced a wheelset.

They're marketing the 51 for marathon racing, which is where I'd want it (when it comes out in XT.) On the Stagecoach 400 route I was spending hours at a time 28-46 and would definitely have shifted a couple times if I could have. Beyond that, the jumps on the 45 look better, obviously.

I should read the article before making my comments. Thanks.

i dig that 2x crankset.

what does it take to make one of those work on a 68mm threaded road shell, just some spacers i assume?

The article says they will not be making wheels and are instead concentrating on hubs. The freehub details are very interesting. They've gone away from pawls and are using a ratchet type setup similar to DT and Chris King.

I'm no racer, but for my general trail riding I would take the 10-51. Glad to see DT is onboard and will have hubs and replacement freehubs available, as I've got DT hubs on pretty much all of my bikes now.

And yeah, I'll be waiting for the XT versions...

Not really a proprietary hub, but a proprietary freehub, like what SRAM did. DT already has compatible hubs and replacement freehubs, and I'm sure others will follow.
