What do ya know, there's actually some good stuff on youtube. For those who like this sort of thing, and you know who you are:

Chameleons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leg8RR76viY&mode=related&search=)

Joy Division (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS99jxAZiAE&mode=related&search=)

Icicle Works (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNa1SXonTx8&mode=related&search=)

Gang of Four (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPJHQmJAiKA)

Echo and the Bunnymen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06TIDkqd380)

Jesus and Mary Chain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hclcrEpui64)

I think my boss may fire me if one more squall of feedback erupts from my cubicle. Great live stuff, hope you like guitars!

Radio Broadcast:
Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker
going here, two down, nobody on, no score,
bottom of the ninth, there's the wind-up and
there it is, a line shot up the middle, look
at him go. This boy can really fly!
He's rounding first and really turning it on
now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna
try for second; the ball is bobbled out in center,
and here comes the throw, and what a throw!
He's gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he's out!
No, wait, safe--safe at second base, this kid really
makes things happen out there.
Batter steps up to the plate, here's the pitch--
he's going, and what a jump he's got, he's trying
for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt--
safe at third! Holy cow, stolen base!
He's taking a pretty big lead out there, almost
daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
glance over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted
down the third base line, the suicide squeeze in on!
Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close,
here's the throw, there's the play at the plate,
holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!who's on third atmo

This thread unleashes a cascade of sonic memories. Living in London early 80s. Cold apartment near Finchley Road. Lella is working late in the cinema. I'm huddled beneath the sheets clutching my radio. Waiting for the John Peel show. The highlight of an otherwise miserable day.

How English are most of those bands? It always amazed me at the time - say when The Clash toured the US - that anyone outside England (and that means England, not the UK) could get these bands. But they - you - obviously did. And still do. You get it.

And wouldn't the world be a better place if every radio station had a John-Peel-a-like on at both primetimes (breakfast and drive) playing just all sorts of weird but interesting ****. Stuff that just makes you think: is this great or is it c r a p? Rather than knowing before the needle hits the vinyl (oops, showing my age) that it's going to be c r a p. Radio that makes you think. What ever happened to that?

Feeling guilty about my colonial music posting. So, just to show that we got it as well, how about:

Pixies - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHbsBidn-5E
Husker Du - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFjlWlqJDos
early REM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofLGxs7c8xM

(Can't find any Green on Red. Youtube ain't all it's cracked up to be then....)

And a recent favorite, Jose Gonzalez found here: from SouthbySouthWest in Austin March/06 (http://www.neverhappened.org/neverhappened/2006/03/jose_gonzalez_l.html)

Both shows are on also on Podcasts from iTunes: KEXP seattle radio

By the way... that radio you're looking for, it's here.

Plus Ca Change, Plus C'est La Meme Chose
- Alphonse Karr, 1849

I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial
doing anything my radio advised
with every one of those late night stations
playing songs bringing tears to me eyes
I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver
when the switch broke 'cause it's old
They're saying things that I can hardly believe.
They really think we're getting out of control.

Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice
'cause they think that it's treason.
So you had better do as you are told.
You better listen to the radio.

I wanna bite the hand that feeds me.
I wanna bite that hand so badly.
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me.

Some of my friends sit around every evening
and they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed
You either shut up or get cut out;
they don't wanna hear about it.
It's only inches on the reel-to-reel.
And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feel

Wonderful radio
Marvelous radio
Wonderful radio
Radio, radio
-Elvis Costello, 1978

But Grant's got some good ideas. Personally, I listen to MIT's station during my morning drive ("Breakfast of Champions", yo) and occassionally catch their live-in-the-studio shows (forget the name...) in the evening.

...and thanks for the memories from GooTube. Anyone have a link to the 'Mats video for "B@stards of Young", the single shot of a stereo speaker?

It's a good question - I grew up here in sunny Southern Cal, a far cry from the bleak weather and economy in England at that time, so can't really explain why this type of music appeals to me. I guess angst is somewhat universal - this stuff was quite popular here back in the day. Meanwhile, I've evolved through several different life-phases and left most of my angst behind, but that music still "rocks my world" - go figure.

And, I shudder to think what my music collection would sound like if not for John Peel. Has anyone stepped up to take his place? Huge shoes to fill there.

I have always felt an affinity for the movies that depict English factory town life and the 'blokes' who inhabit that world...I spent my teenage years in a mining town in the mid-southern U.S....and though the accents were different, I am sure the attitudes where similiar. At the time we listened to metal a lot....and when I met a few cute art students in college, my exposure to the Cure, XTC, Roxy Music and the like was a result of very cool girls showing this 'country boy'....a thing or two about great music.
