After posting a photo of my newly-built cross bike in another thread, I received a number of questions about the BMW in the background... I wish it was mine, but our team mechanic is not only a badass cross racer and bike mechanic, he builds and tunes E30s. Here are a few more photos of the car (and one of my bike, to keep this somewhat relevant...).

My only mildly-interesting contribution to this thread is my Volvo wagon. I slowly built a 2007 XC70 into a more offroad capable vehicle, then wrapped it for my side business. If you were ever wondering about the marketing value of a wrap, I can attest that it's worth every dollar.
The work was largely cosmetic, but ended up being pretty capable in cross race parking lot / fields :) Some wheel well reshaping, spacers in the back, plasti dipped rims, complete matte black wrap + matte orange graphics, smoked tail lights...

That wrap looks great. Curious about it; ballpark cost? Do you wash the car normally or does the wrap require more care? How is it aging?

Thanks! The wrap was pricey because I did a complete matte black base, then overlaid orange graphics that could be changed each year. Here's a general breakdown:
Wrap: $3k
Tires: $1,400
Dipped rims: $250
Smoked lights: $250
I hand wash the car weekly without any issue. After 2 years, pieces of the wrap started to wear / peel - especially around the mirrors, door handles. But overall, it was a great investment that paid for itself many times over.
I'm actually selling the car now since I replaced it with a Tacoma. I'm excited to design a new wrap, but I'll be sad to see this one go.

You park cars in your garage??? The last car I parked in a garage was sold about ten years (and two houses) ago.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5039/5810448054_0ab79f296c_b.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/gp/49705339@N00/e41K33)
Every time we get even remotely close to being able to squeeze a car in there, something else comes along to consume the space. OTOH, I do have several bikes in the garage, three on the floor, four more hanging from hooks. Also have a bunch of wheels hanging from rafters, and tubulars "aging" in the far corner. So it's not all bad.

When you go to share a photo (the little curved arrow), poke the BBCode option, choose the size you want, then paste the entire long mess into your forum post. It effectively inserts two
fragments (replace < and > with [ and ]). I always delete the second.

I don't have a garage so its just my neighbors who park and squat their old cars in front of my house. Not worth photographing
Those E30s are cool, but my heart is with the Volvo. I have an '04 XC70 and have been thinking about doing some mild suspension upgrades with a minor lift, you know, for all the potholes in Philly. Your's looks great! BTW, I think yours is an '08. The P3 chassis came out for 2008, 2001-07 were the P2. Also, feel free to sell it to me :-)

You guys should stop by swedishbricks.net and join the mailing list. Much of the talk there is focused on 200/700/900 series Volvos, with an occasional Amazon or P1800 thread.
Also, lots of off-topic banter. The listmeister (me) is somewhat lenient. :)

I went kind of nuts buying Deere lawn tractors at the spring consignment sales, brought home five of them and a bunch of parts (big parts like engines, transmissions, hoods and wheels). So far have three of them up and mowing, other two have major engine issues. Already had 3 project tractors and one good reliable one in the shed, so it's kind of crowded right now.

I don't have any current pictures, so this will have to do - the little Ninja (300) in the foreground and my '73 GTV under the gray cover. If I were to take a picture today the Aprilia (RST-1000) is sitting in that spot, and the Kawasaki is farther to the left, between the Alfa and my daily-driver Subaru.
I'm thinking pretty seriously of selling the Alfa, because I really don't drive it enough and I could use the room for the motos.

My 1982 Yamaha XV920R. Endless mods and customizations on it. The main one is the XV920R case with the crank, rods, cylinders and heads from a 2003 XVS1100. Add JE pistons, Web cam, porting and other goodies. Is about 65 lbs lighter than stock. Fun old bike. My dad's 63 Corvette has been parked since ~1977 and was in the middle of round two of being customized. We've just moved it into my garage and plan to get it on the road and eventually finish the body work.

I haven't had a garage in over 10 years; hell, I haven't even owned a car in half a dozen years.
But I do have a rented rehearsal studio where I keep most of the crap that used to live in my garage. Right now the thing taking up the most room is this stack:

Could probably fit four bikes in that space if I hung them vertically and interlocked the bars!

I used to race with a guy who grew up on a farm in Iowa and his dad collected farm tractors. He told me at last count his 78 year old dad had something like 270 tractors and he was a little freaked out he'd have to deal with all of that after he was gone.

If you farm with them you need parts that are often no longer available from the manufacturer. If you are collecting, the same is true minus the tax write-off. I have about 10 Olivers that run, and 5 or 6 of other brands. Newest is 1973, oldest is 1942. It's mostly about keeping some examples running. Hope those 270 are under a good roof, but I have my doubts.

I'm guessing they wouldn't be as I can't imagine that many poll sheds on one farm. I haven't seen the guy in a few years as I heard he moved back to Iowa. Hope he didn't get stuck selling it all for scrap but I'm guessing that's probably closer to reality than an auction that would bring in retirement type money.

Have a BMW i3 that gets charged in the garage and my wife’s CX-5 gets parked in there too...the rest is bikes.
The BMW lease is coming up due, and I’ll be going to a truck or van (Ford transit) that’ll get parked on the road and free up half the garage for bikes and trainer space.

I love Volvo wagons (all wagons, really), so I'm a bit biased. I've owned a 1985 240 Wagon, 2004 XC70 and a 2008 XC70 and loved each of them. They're heavy and sluggish but incredibly solid driving cars. I experienced plenty of small(ish) electrical and mechanical issues around 100k miles with each one. Volvo owners seem to post endless YouTube videos, so I ended up learning quite a bit along the way. Mostly, I learned that everything between the dash and grill is CRAMMED in and hard to access :) Most of my time in the car is short, city driving, and all of those Volvos suffered in terms of gas mileage. Probably 14mpg on average.
All of my mods on the '08 were cosmetic – as it was a big rolling billboard. After adding BF Goodrich tires and shaping the wheel wells, it was relatively capable car. That said, my only off roading was parking in crappy fields at bike races... If you really want to build an offroad-worthy XC70, Bad Swede (https://www.xc70liftkit.com/) has a 2" lift kit, but only for 2000-2007 models. Their forum is really good as well.
The most famous offroad XC70 is IPD's beast of a wagon (https://www.ipdusa.com/blogs/3/volvo-retires-ipd-s-xc70r-all-terrain-to-the-volvo-museum-in-gothenburg). Nothing in that build was off the shelf, so lots of fabricating. It's an amazing vehicle!
For reference, I've also owned two Outbacks and a Tacoma. The Outbacks are much lighter feeling / handling cars, but I never had a connection with them. They somehow felt cheap after driving a Volvo.
I just traded the '08 XC70 for a new Tacoma, and it's amazing. It's my first new car in many years, and I'm loving it.

Thanks. I'll have to check out some of the Volvo forums. I've wanted a Volvo ever since I saw the Cannondale Team Car Volvo Wagon. But somehow ended up with an SUV each time it was time for a new car. Costco recently came out with special pricing on the Volvos. Not sure how good the prices are, but another friend is raving about his Highlander Hybrid. I'm partial to Toyota's and Honda's for their reliability or at least perceived reliability.
Here's a little side story. My college friend was quite well-off and bought a brand new 850GLT. During a camping trip which involved a caravan of his newish Volvo and a beatup VW bus, he sped ahead, lost control on a curve and the backend of the Volvo hit a tree. He was fine and was standing outside his now wrecked Volvo surveying the damage when the VW bus came upon the scene. His first remark was whether he should get a Mercedes next. (Which he did)

I have Volvo envy too. But I'd want a V90 wagon, not the raised thing they are promoting. And I'd want a sense of where they (Volvo) the company were going.
In my garage I have a Subaru 2005 Legacy Gt Wagon and my wife has a 2009 Outback. The wagon has 81k, the Outback 50+k. At age 71 neither of of will ever NEED a new car.
The GT wagon, bought in another lifetime, was maybe the best purchase I ever made. It was a few extra dollars but it's comfortable, and brings a smile to my face every time I hit the accelerator. Acceleration is effortless. (240 hp, turbo). Bike goes in the back with front wheel on. Perfect for me. My wife's car has a bike rack on top in the rare event we need to transport two.
Hanging from the ceiling on hooks a Lightspeed classic with Dura Ace, 1990's era. I bought it used around the turn of the century and rode until 2011. At that time, my wife convinced me to go get fitted at Serotta. They watched me stretch on the floor (or not stretch) and build a more "upright" bike which I ride to this day.
Also hanging from the ceiling is a Merlin ti, custom something or other with Campy drive train and old creaky Mavic Wheels. I bought it used in Upland CA. in 2007 and have been using it in the winters out there since. I stored it out in SoCal up to this year when I bikeflighted it back East here.
Along the wall is a custom Serotta ti, built to measure in 2011, newly updated with Ultegra DI2. The seat from the Merlin occasionally bonks me in the head when I'm accessing hte Serotta but otherwise the situation works. I'd sell one or more of the excess bikes but the classified sales situation looks like more trouble than it's worth.

.
I had a neighbor who had 3-400 JD two cylinder tractors, all stored in good buildings. Since he died his son has been selling them off at auction. It's not a good time to sell as grain prices are very low. Farmers will pay a lot more for old tractors when they are making a profit. Even so, they may be bringing what the father paid for them, and a lot more than the son did. The family has plenty of modern tractors to farm with. Another neighbor farms about 1200 acres with just 6 tractors. Two smaller ones from the mid 60s, two from the 1980s, and two under 10 years old. I'd love to trade my 16 old tractors for 4 good new ones, meaning circa 30 years old.
I have corn, soybeans and hay. I don't know of any commercial potatoes closer than 30 miles away. They are mostly grown "locally" in the Galena area and in Wisconsin. If I was to guess, I'd say the soil in my neighborhood is too heavy and wet. Some years past there was a crop of potatoes from an 80 acre local field given away. They were grown for Lays but the crop fell short of their standards. Never heard the reason why they were rejected. Could have been disease or perhaps sugar or starch content.

Wow, impressive.
What I learned from my girlfriend's father (besides a deep love for fly-fishing, horse-shoes, pinochle, and whiskey...in addition to deep love for his daughter) was that the farming life can be a real b@tch. They were dry farmers, therefore completely subject to the vagaries of the weather. Make millions one year, lose millions the next, all because of a few days or so on the calendar. Brutal stuff. But, he was a very solid, grounded, happy man. The entitre family was. Good times, all in all.

This 67 Cougar has been in the family for over forty years. My dad bought it sometime during the mid 70s. I drove it some in high school(79-81). I joined the Marines then and lost track of the car. It sat in Mom’s back yard for several years, and then in Dad’s damp garage for several more..
I took stewardship of the Merc after Dad passed away. It’s been in my garage since 2002. Kids took priority, so it has been dormant up until last summer. My son helped me get running again, and we’re whittling away at mechanical stuff while we drive it a bit. The cat has some rust issues and needs a bunch of work, but it sure puts a big smile on my kids face whenever we fire it up and go somewhere..
That’s what is taking space in my garage.
