I friend has a Speedvagen cross bike with Paul cantilever brakes. He hates the front ones because of the chatter. He'd like to change to something else like a v-brake maybe. I seem to recall some difficulty doing this because of the height of the brakes or something which requires the posts to be at a different spot. Logic says this would only apply to the rear brake. Am I right? Anyone change from Paul brakes to something else?

We have had quite a few threads about eliminating canti chatter. I'd suggest trying some of those ideas before buying new brakes. PAUL cantis can be wonderful when they are set up correctly.

Yeah, I'm with Ken. I had some on a bike and thought they were excellent. No chatter. Nicely made; solid, robust.

Try the "Tektro Cantilever Front Cable Hanger - 1277A - Fork Mount ", similar to above. Black or silver; really inexpensive; comes supplied with two lengths fork brake nut iirc; if not, Tektro customer service (really good) will promptly mail you the proper one.
No chatter at all with a fork-mounted hanger.

.
I run one of the tektro fork crown hangers on one of my cross bikes with paul neo-retros. Not an audible shudder since they were installed.

That's why I won't have a canti fork without a drilled crown.
