I'm sitting here watching it on NBCSN and wishing I had planned to be there.

Next year.

Anyone watching a stage this year?

Watching it (in the background) now. Didn't realize it would be on. I had the computer monitor turned off, then all of a sudden I heard bike talk, turned on the monitor and boom, there was the tour. Going to be nice to have all day entertainment this week (Giro, Tour of Cali).

Sent a message to my sister, who lives in Livermore, letting her know it will be near her later this week.

Will try real hard to catch the Monterey / Laguna Seca area stage (online), as I lived in that area while ago.

I'm enjoying all of the cycling related commercials too.

The Assos is kinda good.

Did I hear Ligget say “NASCAR finish line”?

Yeah, watching it in the background. Not too inspired by the course.

Who is our pick? They seem to think it will be Dolf Lundgren.

I bet Sagan free lances to a win.

My god is there anything more boring than a 200k circuit race? Maybe having to listen to Phil and Paul during it. At least the European commercials are interesting.

the route used to go right past my front door in ojai.
watching the finish atop gibraltar a few years ago was so rad. so many ppl crammed together on the side of a windy mountain road is probably the closest thing to a real euro bike race ill ever be a part of.

Watched it in person for a bit, but the circuit definitely kind of gets repetitive. Amazing to see how fast and tight they get into corners!

Also managed to walk around the lifestyle expo and got into the Rally 1 minute sprint challenge leaderboard! Nothing won but pride hahahttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180513/253eecf2e48c966473f475c139f2a848.jpg1697960215

Monday there's an RCC group riding from Santa Monica to catch the stage finish on Gibraltar (a bit less than 100 miles one way).

There are a lot of other groups doing the same, and one person speculated that if combined it would be a ~700 person peloton.

A good friend of my brother has a son on the Trek team, they're heading up for the stage that goes through Markleeville (forget which one that is, maybe the Queen Stage?).

I will probably attend the Women's race at Sacramento on Saturday. I'm mostly going to try to get a couple more autographs on my Rabo-Liv jersey - Kasia is on the startlist and I'm hoping that PFP will be as well (the startlist isn't complete).

Unfortunately most of the bigger Euro teams aren't attending so my interest this year is low.

it's not like you can see the pros any weekend...if you are close...make an effort. I've gone every year...never gets old to me

Went down to watch a rally rider that is a friend. Brandon mcnulty. Had a good time. Race was uneventful, other than Brandon had a flat.

I wonder if they have figured out the schedules this year, or if we're in for another week of the final 20km being preempted by hockey.

Agree- always fascinating to see the worlds best cyclists in the flesh even if not the marquis names.

Heading to Morgan Hill for the TT event on WED. See you there P?

Fortunate to go as guest of CA Technologies ( one of the title sponsors of Trek Segfredo) so will be hanging out all day in their tent. Will do the corporate event TT suited up as Trek Segfredo posseurs, get pointers from 3 time Olympic gold medalist, Kristin Armstrong and ride the course early AM on team Madone bikes prior to the event.

I went down to see the Long Beach stage and had a blast. I'm super happy that I went. Even the wife had a good time.

Since it was a circuit course, it was possible to hop on our bikes and actually ride on the closed course to another spot to watch the race when the riders came back around. We watched from five or six spots over the course of the race.

I work out in Agoura, so I was going to try and sneak out of work to see today's stage go by near the first KOM point, but I had a lunch time presentation.

I will definitely go out to any southern California stages I can make in upcoming years.

Cheers!
Ben

That's a lot of fun. About 8 or 9 years ago, when the TT ran in downtown Palo Alto, I spent some time in the CSC tent at the finish line. Good food *and* a bike race! :)

Were you able to get past all the ads?

I waited and waited until I just decided it was time to turn off the "TV".

And there was no sound, so at least the non-stop commercials were far less annoying.

Having given television the final boot a few years ago leaves me with little tolerance for what seemed almost normal five years ago.

>>>>>>>>>>Editing here, thanks for the link Alan. I tried it again and voila, there is sound, ...and a bike race!

I have been watching Eurosport coverage all spring with great commentators.
How terrible is it to listen to Phil Liggett?
So many mistakes, doesn't know the riders, has nothing insightful to add-

Someone did an explainer on Eurosport and VPN during P-R. It should be pinned.

Fubo offers so little for so much $ in comparison and NBC is just a head shake of bad commentary and half assed or non-coverage of good races.

Magnus actually had interesting things to say and no local flavor or human interest. Kudos for actually bike racing coverage.

Seen the results from Gibraltar and...USA guys taking it on the chin... Tegay at 0:00:50, McNulty 0:01:15, Stetina 0:02:11, Lachlan 0:02:45, Powless 0:03:39. Took a bit to find Craddock and Phinney 0:10:12 and 0:18:30.

Any chance by a USA guy to get a stage win?

I don't see it.

Lachlan is from Australia.

McNulty's ride today was phenomenal.

Pretty decent showing from a country that spends nearly nil on the sport, from a cultural and financial perspective.

can't recall how many AToC TT I have seen? palo alto, sac, solvang, san jose twice....one other? it's always great. have a picture of my daughter in the start house. Cancellera blasting right in front of my LBS.

again, if you are close, Doped. Not doped. whatever. the circus is in town!

the two guys in the breakaway stage one avg 2+ for 2.5 hours. yes, it was flat, little wind. but 27mph for 2.5 hours? gotta see that.

my fav is the year I saw then destroy tunitas creek. guys are coasting up the 15% section that I work my a$$ off on.

I started a new gig in SF so no time to take off an sit on the road with my cowbell. but, I would if I could.

it sort of counts I saw you but didnt meet you at the lemond/oakley event. so close, yet so far. it'll happen and I look forward to it.

Wait till the TT, mcnulty will shine, he might have a chance at yellow if today goes good.
I think he saved a little back on yesterday’s climb . Not sure but other than TJ who can put up a decent TT that’s in front of him.

Oh yeah I’m biased as I’ve never been faster than Brandon. Even when he was 15

I don't know if they still do it, but in the past, the Tour would recruit volunteers to work as course marshalls.

I was on Gibraltar towards the top yesterday watching the race. It's about 7 miles long or so with average of 8% grade. My buddy and I posted up at a place where it really kicks. The field was totally shattered early on and by the time they got to us there were only about 10 riders in contention. Sagan and friends came through around 15 to 18 minutes later...It's pretty cool to ride up that mountain on fresh legs and then see the pros just destroy it after a couple of hours in the saddle already.

Yes...I blew it that Lachlan was from Australia. Been paying a bit of attention to him over the years with him with some of the stories of his challenges with riding/expectations.

I do hope the US guys hang tough. They did do quite well today for Stage 3! :hello:
