Whenever I pull on those things they make an awful grinding noise and it makes it WAY harder to pedal, so I don't use them anymore.

sounds like hipster mischief to me...did you watch the video? the dude with the kewl hair squeezes the crap out of the brake lever but not only does he not slow down, he's not watching where he's going -- just sight-seeing all around. Slick video production and trendy graphics can only take you so far...
