reaches 300 million at 7:46 a.m. ET Tuesday, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. I gather George Carlin never did find that woman.

Back is 1955, when I graced this planet with my presence, the U.S. population was a bit more than half the current count.

It's small wonder there's an increased interest in cycling, it's in the numbers!

300 million is chump change.
both india and china have populations in excess of two billion
combined, that's over 1/3 of the world population concentrated in south and east asia.

stock up? (http://www.bikepro.com/products/hubs/hubs_nuke.html)

I agree that 300 million is less than significant in purely quantitative terms, however the rest of the story would factor in the percentage of the world's resources consumed per capita by USAmericans versus Chinese and Indians. In these terms, the USA still leaves a bigger footprint on the earth.

don't look at the situation statically; just wait ten or fifteen years until the development models come to fruition.

That's a good point. The USA has set a dubious "resource hungry" standard that those countries will emulate. I remain less than optimistic.

they are well under way in terms of emulating; look into the forecasts for china's petrol consumption over the next twenty years and you may find yourself less than-less than optimistic.

you may need this to cope (http://www.prozac.com/index.jsp)

Yes, that's the calculation driving the Chinese government's "one child per family" policy.

Yeah, like someone standing upside down on their head, trying to figure out some solutions. All they get is a bigger headache.

"Overpopulation" in developing nations seems to be a growing problem, no pun intened, but just as a side note, I think its only a problem because we've made it a problem. Overpopulation is a term we coined when it became apparent that modern, colonial agriculture doesn't mesh well with the cultures of developing nations. Its a phenomenon thats been constructed by globalization. My point is, "overpopulation" should be thought of in terms of much bigger, interconnected issues than just numbers of people.

when more and more of those 'numbers' are having personal automobiles and refridgeration units attached to them at a rate that is growing daily by the hundreds of thousands, it strikes me as being more or less about the numbers, but i'm with you in spirit.
