View Full Version : Hitch rack storage when not on car?

I recently bought a Thule T2 Pro XT and while it does a great job transporting bikes, it's big and heavy.
It's pretty easy to remove from the car, but then what?
I looked on amazon and found the Swagman Bicycle Carriers X Mount Bike Carrier Storage Rack
It has decent reviews, but before getting it I wanted to tap the knowledge base here for other clever solutions. I was thinking about something that does not attach to the wall, and the feet extend out to keep the center of mass over the base. Should I just make my own out of 2x4 and attach the storage rack?
Thanks!

i keep mine on a hook in the wall in the garage. It takes quite a bit of wall space but its the best place i have for it.

If it's a heavy hitch rack just mount a couple of plumbing flanges onto the wall studs. Then screw in a section of galvanized pipe to hang the rack on.

That's why I bought a 1 UP. It folds up to a small compact shape, about like a large suitcase, and sits easily in the corner of my garage. Sell that, and get a 1 UP.

I have a Thule T2 and I agree, it is heavy. I'll post some pics from home tonight about the "rack hanger" i have setup on the wall of the garage. Keeps it out of the way.

Basically these will do the job, just keep them spaced out.

I got a really good deal on the Thule... thanks C40_guy
I have a 1 UP roof tray. Great product and almost did it. I want to give the Thule a shot.

so square peg in a round hole?

I have a 1-Up rack & use this. Love it. A bit pricey, but has been a joy to use. I just take the rack off the vehicle in the "up" position & slot it into the hole. Reasonably low-profile, fits on the side-wall of the garage without encroaching on car space (and our 2-car garage is *just* wide enough for our two cars). Nice & sturdy.

Would work for any 1.125" or 2" hitch rack, but better for those that fold.

I hang my T2 on the wall...

Speaking of T2's.....if anyone is looking for the two bike extension kit, I have one unused and still in the box I need to sell. Turns out wife and kids don't want to go on bike trips with me....It's the T2 Classic style...going for about $330 on Amazon...$100 and you pick up.

Puget Sound area only...I don't want to have to deal with shipping it. PM me if interested....

Sorry for thread hi-jack.....

I have Kuat 2 bike and it is a little heavy and cumbersome. After a year or so in the garage, frequently in the way, I moved it to the side of the house. It's on concrete and leaning against the fence with the yard cart, composter barrel and other infrequently used items. it's out of sight and I'm happy.

When I plan to use the rack in short order, I often pull it from the hitch and lay it flat on a padded mat below the vehicle (suv). I can then easily leave and return to the garage without issue. (Parking saddle affixed to garage floor.)

How much space is in your garage now? Height of ceilings?

I recently made a floating storage shelve in my garage. Mostly to store all these bike items... work stands...roof rack / roof rack trays etc etc.
Worth looking into making something "DIY"

Think the whole project cost me like $50... and it cleaned up my garage by taking everyone i had once stored in the corner on the ground...off the ground.

Thanks! I was meaning to build my own hitch mount receiver for the wall but never really put much thought into the design yet for something homebrewed. I've got most of the scrap wood already lying around (and plenty of wood screws). I'll inventory what I've got and hopefully have enough to built it from there.

I currently have my T2 laying on the ground as I use it to hold up my bike(s) I ride on a regular basis in my garage (next to my hanging bikes on a hook by the front wheel that don't get ridden on a regular basis).

I like the way you think. But my wife doesnt!

I am going to build one. If I don't get to it in a reasonable amount of time, I will spend $60 on the piece of metal. I think I have enough scrap...
I am thinking to mount one outside on the deck support, and one inside the garage for winter.
I have to say, if the rack stash was like $20 I would just buy it.

My T2 rests on a piece of 2x4 leaning against the garage wall.

I got a small all-purpose dolly from Costco to out it one and roll to the truck. I'm done carrying the thing.
