When I move to a campy compact crank do I also need to replace my current deraileur with the compact version?

No, as long as the current front dr is a double it will run both. I have used a record double and a daytona compact and they both work well as long as they are adjusted properly. Ymmv, Frank

My mileage varied. It works for a while, but not as well as a true compact fd.
