A buddy saw a cyclist on our group ride on Thursday riding a crank set that had independent positioning for each crank arm. There was some racheting mechanism that allowed him to have both feet at the 6:00 postition simultaneously. He thought the guy had one foot unclipped, but no, both were clipped. He was able to pedal with one leg at a time, the other still clipped in.

Tell me, what are the advantages to such a bizzare crank?

I tried a google search, but came up blank.

Thanks in advance.

It's called PowerCranks. Many pros use them, I'm using them to help with leg-strength discrepancy from an accident. Even if you have two strong legs, these things will humble you...then you'll get stronger the more you use them. Check them out at www.powercranks.com

I rode with a guy that has 'em. They really do look odd...

I saw a pimp car with those spinner rims--very odd. I'm betting power cranks would look equally weird. You get used to the way something looks/works.
