I was interested to read that he never reached the rank of Gunnery Sargeant while on active duty but he sort of got it as an honorific due to the success of his TV show. He was fun to watch.

He was originally hired as a tech consultant for FMJ, but Kubrick was so impressed by him he gave him a starring role. He wrote the majority of his own dialogue too. What an amazing talent.

This is a bummer. Check out his role in the movie The Siege of Firebase Gloria.

One of the most original and best out there in his character, and that character also in real life. Genuine, RIP Gunnery Sergeant Ermey.

My Dad was in the Corps from 1951-1955 and he once told me that RLE’s DI scenes were spot on from what he experienced at Parris Island.

My father joined the Marine Corps in 1959. He didn't care so much for the movie Full Metal Jacket but he said the same thing and it brought back many memories, err um, I mean night mares :D
