When Gasparatto took off after Valgren and Kreuzinger, Sagan didn't have a response. Craddock gets the US into the top ten with ninth place.

My take: the only team with two riders in the group won, as they should have. The favorites all looked at each other to pull back the move until it was too late. Valgren gets his second classic of the season.

Valgren is certainly killing it this spring. Is it me, or doed he look quite chubby for a pro?

Hit the nail on the head, at 7k i expected more fireworks at the finish, but Astana did some string work and earned the win for Valgren who raced strong.

and yes, he did seem soft in the middle for a pro... maybe its just that color on him?

Consensus was he was doing a solid for his friend and teammate from Tinkoff, Kreuziger. I think he had a response if he wanted.

Kinda looks like Sagan did not care to put an effort in towards the end ....

Heaven forbid a comment from someone who actually watched the race.

I'm no fanboy, but even to a relatively uneducated eye, it was pretty obvious that whether it was due to frustration at being relied upon to pull or a nice gesture toward Kreuziger, he had plenty left.

Sagan seems to have a lil jiggle in the middle too. Im down with it. Should classics riders have 6 packs?

Kreuziger had nothing to do with it. He didn't want to drag Valverde and Alaphillipe to the line if they weren't going to do any work. Alaphillipe especially looked particularly strong in the last 20k. Which is fine tacitcal sense to make, but this notion of the World Champion's bottomless magnanimity to his former teammate is absurd.

But sure, whatever validates some absurd view of the public persona of people's favorite bike ridah evah.

Snark in the last paragraph aside, I concur with your tactical assessment. Sagan's paid to win races. He most certainly would not (IMO) gift a classic race to a former teammate. Sagan, Valverde, and Alaphillipe marked each other while the winning move disappeared up the road. That's racing. Again, hat's off to Astana. They placed two strong riders in the final selection of the race. They had the tactical advantage and used it well.
