I'm looking for a file-tread/semi-knobby tire in 36-38mm size (actual, not indicated). I am currently running Terrene Elwood in 700x40. Love the tires, but they grew to 42mm (on Pacenti SL23 rims) and just too close for comfort on the frame.

Something similar to the Elwood's would be great. I looked at the Challenge Gravel Grinder in 700x36. Side knobs seem pretty aggressive. But they might work. Panaracer GK SK seem good as well. Clement MSO is another consideration, but I would like to keep the weight to 400g or below.

Any other suggestions?

Hard to go wrong with the Panaracers, in my humble opinion. I have a pair on my gravel bike and like them a lot.

I ride the Hutchingson Overrides. The reason is the Compass Barrow Pass tires are too wide for my frame. They are both are listed as 38mm. The sides knobs are not aggressive and they roll nicely on the pavement. Check them out. I like them.

Solid recommendation. I have the 35mm version of the Override and like it for the same reasons.

The 36 MSO is a great tubeless tire. It runs large and performs very well, though it may be a burlier tire than what you want. What about the PanaRacer Gravel King SK 38?

Have to give credit to Joost for this one. But yes... I LOVE the Overrides. The 38's roll better than my MSO 32's. No comparison. Great off and on road... I don't feel like I'm on a gravel bike when I'm on pavement.

Just mounted and did my first couple rides on gravel king sks and really like them. Fairly light but don't seem at all fragile. Aired up tubeless super easy. Coming off schwalbe g-ones that I also really liked but found would get a little overwhelmed when pushed hard in loose or wet conditions. The panaracers also grow on wide rims. My 35s measure 38 at 40lbs, on a wide (24 internal) rim.

Here is the tread pattern of a mostly worn out Hutchingson Override tire. I replaced them about two weeks after this picture was taken...

Thanks Gents. I will try out the Overrides.

What do the 38's measure at? Again, I'd like to keep the width at 38mm max. These will be mounted on SL23 rims or DT RR1.1 (~20mm exterior). If these will be over, I'll go 35.

I dont know but I suspect less than 38mm. The reason is the Compass Barrow Pass tires (38mm) are wider by, lets say, 2mm.

I think I read on the internet they were more like 36mm widths but I am not sure. Some exhaustive google research probably would yield that answer.

Tell you what buy the 38s, mount them and if they are too big I will buy them off of you for $5 less than you paid.

I can confirm that relatively young Barlows are indeed 36mm wide on standard Hed 23 o-o rims. As is typical with Compass tires they'll likely grow to ~37-38mm over time.

How much clearance do you have on your Mosaic chainstays?? I only got maybe 1-2mm on each side!

I'm running 35mm schwalbe g-ones tubeless on my gravel bikes. Really like how they roll on gravel and pavement as well. The tread pattern looks similar to the overrides.

+1 for Panaracer GravelKing here. My 35s inflate to 38 on an 18.5mm internal rim.

Excellent. On my bike the Barrows did fit (about at the same width of the Overirdes) when I first installed them but after a ride or two they became too wide. So I would guess the Overrides are around 36mm. These were mounted on Enve M50 rims.

About the same. I like to think 2mm on each side..,,

Been really happy with the G-one and the Terano Dry. Both roll great and set up tubeless super easy.
