View Full Version : Eroica California 2018 -- who's going, and what are you riding?

Everyone's favorite mildly-contentious cosplay/reenactment ride is this weekend!

If you're headed there, drop a note here with a photo of your bike (and yourself?) so that we know to say hi. Maybe specify which route, too, I guess.

Personally, I'll be doing the coastal route on the Trek below (although I've since swapped out the bar tape to black with red perforations).

Dearest Martha,
Word has reached our motley band from my last correspondence that some preparing for this journey have asked that we share our equipment predilections so that we may more easily find ourselves in the common bond of brotherhood should our paths cross on our escapades.

Far be it from me to disappoint a fellow comrade in arms whose company may provide a moment of succor during the mid of day when the sun's blaze is unrelenting, or when the night chill and the howl of some unseen beast stirs the basest fears within a man.

I am, of course, using that latest of inventions, the pneumatic tire and what those amongst our contingent who take to HG Wells' authorial ravings call a spoon brake. Their flights of technological fancy I find confounding, but I am not one to refuse the notion of progress and these perform admirably. Just yesterday I was able to avert disaster with a cow in the road by beginning my deceleration but a quarter mile from his location. The speed with which my progress was halted truly was jarring, and I doubt any gentleman in good health and humor would scarcely need a stronger device to arrest his forward movement in times of crisis.

Martha, I must ask, there have been tales of the most fanciful variety about safety bicycles that will be joining this Eroica that are not constructed from steel, but the woven fibers of some cloth? Surely these are the ravings of madmen and fools. Who would ever come to believe in the certainty and reliability of such a machine?

That's me, all 6'3" and 260# of climbing sloth, along with my sweetie (she won't be riding) and the 1961 Bianchi Competizione I'll be riding. This was taken at Eroica CA #1 in 2015, and the bike has had a few changes (like the entire drivetrain, barcons for the DT shifters, the handlebars and the brake levers), but the overall effect will be very much the same.

40 mile route for this Clydesdale.

I will also have a table at the Saturday swap meet with a lot of accumulated vintage stuff for sale. (The RD, FD, handlebars, and cranks are among the goodies available.) Let me know you're from Paceline and I'll take a little somethin'-somethin' off the prices.

From what I hear of some of the climbs it may come in handy. It's the crankset that was on it when I got it. I swapped the 48/44 rings for 52/36 and considered removing the 26t ring, but.....better safe than sorry.

I have had triples on most of my bikes and never saw a down side to them. I don't care about a little weight one way or the other and when I needed that low/low gear I was glad I had it. Heck my favorite cranks of all time are TA Zephyr with 48-38-28 rings that I used with 13-27 or 13-29 cogs. I have a 24 ring in my box of stuff that I never used but I might have done so if my cassette was a 12-25 or smaller.

The Pelizolli and the Davidson look great, and yes -- the triple is really nice to have on some of the dirt/gravel climbs. Or a low-range double, I guess.

There was a comment from a reader over on Red Kite Prayer's article about Eroica that he was into re-enacting an American (or British?) club rider from the 70's, not an Italian racer from the 60's. That made a lot of sense to me.

Love these bikes, thank you all for sharing. Wish there was a similarly themed ride closer to me so I had an excuse to build up a vintage rig. To Choke above with the '66 Frejus- How does front shifting work with the huge gap in chainring size? Is that typical of the era?

To Choke above with the '66 Frejus- How does front shifting work with the huge gap in chainring size? Is that typical of the era?It shifts pretty well IMO. It's certainly not modern day fast but it's more than fine for me. It's not typical at all of that era - quite the opposite in fact. I have the original crank and it has 52/49 rings and was paired with a 14-22 freewheel. Those were hard men.

Great bike! How did it end up with the TA crankset? And what is that rear derailleur? Thanks. As you can see above, the original gearing was a bit on the high side....especially since I climb like I have an anchor attached.....so I felt that the TA would allow low gears and be period correct. The RD is a 1st Gen. Campy Rally, which came out a few years later than the bike but is close enough for me.

Great to see everyone out there! I know I saw rccardr at the start, and I'm pretty sure I saw Spdntrxi as well, and also a beautiful repainted Serotta in light blue with white and red lettering (that I can't find the thread to). I saw two different guys on the blue-and-gold Team Miyatas, but I don't know if either was crankles.

Also saw Otis Guy on one of his own frames, and Mike Varley of Black Mountain Cycles on a pink Bruce Gordon.

The eye candy of the bikes was out in full force for the day. I apologize that I didn't photograph anything, but I take photography too seriously the rest of the time, and I wanted to just enjoy the day myself. Looking forwards to more pictures coming.

I know it's a contentious/silly/mildly warped event, but it really is a fun ride if you can get past the arbitrary limitations/rules.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but my modern aesthetic sensibilities make me cringe at the unsightliness of all these old-fashioned "swooping" brake cables. Makes me think one of the greatest bike-related inventions is the internally routed (or even side-routed) cable, which seems like a no-brainer in hindsight. Sorry, go back to admiring these otherwise fine looking antiques.

Really? I think those cables could be just a touch longer so that the curve is a little more graceful, but I genuinely don't mind them -- while I do mind the side-exit of early Shimano STI shift cables, which look awkward to my eye. Just what I grew up with, I guess.

Now, the saddle bag and the "mounting" of the number tag, on the other hand...

swooping = dead sexy!

That being said, I've been a fairly early adopter of modern tech. It was a pretty interesting experience riding on 1981 tech. Some things mattered and others didn't. Since I pretty much road for 5 + hrs solo, I had a lot to dwell on ;-)

Word on the street is that this is the last year in Paso Robles.
They dont like all the bikes ruining the grass and such. Can anyone confirm this?

rccardr
04-19-2018, 08:41 AM
I did the coastal route. Second year without having to walk

My understanding is that 1) Paso Robles charged a fee for the damage to the grass on the town green last year, 2) the large tent that was used for the display and dinner was super expensive, and 3) the town council didn't think that the event brought enough money into the local economy to justify supporting it. Please note although that these items were heard from multiple directions, some of them 'official', nothing has yet been announced or seen in writing other than speculation.

My further understanding is that the event may move down to the coast at Cambria, a town located where the long and coastal routed come onto Rt 1. Before Linn's was a rest stop, Cambria is where they served the tacos, at least in 2016.

Am I missing something? At the very end of the vid he said he was in the 2nd wave so there were people ahead of him. I'm sure there were more than 2 waves for the Heroic Route as well.....they let riders off in smaller groups rather than everyone off at one time.

BTW, at 5:35 there is a rider in a red jersey with a white stripe, which if you look closely says "G.S. Cinghiale" and "Hampsten"....that's Andy H.
