View Full Version : BSA 68 mm shell width: what threaded cups for FSA BBright crankset?

All these bottom bracket options make my head spin.

I picked up a 50-34 FSA BBright crankset today to replace my Campy Centaur 53-39 cranks (experimenting with a compact, went for a cheap option before committing to a "proper" Campy crank). I also picked up what I thought were the proper BB cups to go with it on my 2004 Bianchi ML3 frame with a threaded BSA shell.

But I got it wrong. All the new terms and standards confused my tiny brain. I got BBright and 386EVO mixed up, and just generally fubar'd the situation.

FSA BBright crankset: 30 mm wide spindle, 79 mm long (even says so right on the spindle itself)
Bianchi ML3 frameset: 68 mm wide BSA threaded bottom bracket shell
Zipp VumaQuad threaded outboard BB cups that I stupidly purchased: 68 mm BB shell + 2 x 7 mm wide bearings + a couple spacers = about 84 mm

Got 84 mm. Need 79 mm.

My question? Where do you find threaded BSA BB cups to fit a 30 mm spindle 79 mm in length (the BBright standard)? I've searched the far reaches of the internet, and I just don't seem to be finding anything.

Is there something I'm not understanding here?

Doesn't exist unfortunately. (79-68)/2 = 5.5mm, not really enough for a durable outboard shell and bearing.

I believe "proper" BB30 spindles (i.e. SRAM Red BB30) are the ~same length, and there aren't any BSA bottom brackets for those either (unlike "long" BB30).

So I bought a crankset that I can't use on my frameset.

Sigh...I guess it's true that you really do learn things when you make mistakes.

Am I right in thinking that I could put a BB386EVO crankset on my frame with those cups?

I agree, don't think the BBright will work with external cups. According to this eBay listing there's a MegaExo BB that will allow you to use a BB386 Evo crank.
Part number is 200-3201 (steel bearings).

Honestly, I'd be inclined to go with other options. PowerTorque compacts can be had for reasonable prices, as can Shimano.
