Shimano 11sp rd cassette for 10sp hubs

This may be of interest to those looking to get a bit more life from your 10sp road hubs.

The 11-34T R8000/HG800 cassette includes a 1.85mm spacer which is required on 11sp road hubs. Took me a few to figure that out when I swapped it in. Appears Shimano decided that they can avoid the spokes on a cassette that size much like their MTB cassettes. I can't speak to GS RD compatibility, I'm running XT. Worst case a wolftooth roadlink should solve it.

Fwiw I was considering the SRAM 11-36T, but the Shimano 11-34 has a much nicer progression for the gravel riding I do. 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 34.

Yep, just like all 11speed Shimano mountain bike cassettes. It was one of their "big" announcements with the Ultegra 8000 launch. The smallest cog is cantilevered out beyond the freehub body over the spokes and since the spokes are angled away there is room there.

I think you mean "the biggest cog is cantilevered out beyond the freehub body over the spokes." While quite doable, this limits the minimum size of the biggest sprocket to about 32 teeth or so. So no closely spaced gearing 11spd road racing cassettes (such as an 11-23) on a 10spd freehub.

Edco has an 11-speed cassette that fits a 10-speed freehub (except 7801) in many popular cog combinations - 'taint cheap, of course:

I was thinking lowest gear and typed smallest cog.

You are correct that it only applies (for Shimano) to cassettes where the largest cog (lowest gear) has 34 teeth or more.

One specific model, yes. The 11-34.

That means that, with this cassette, you can install it on a "10-speed" freehub and get a shimano-approved 11-speed cassette on a 10-speed wheel.

The HG800 works great with GS road derailleurs. Shimano is Killin it with 11sp, just wish they'd release a super compact for touring.

Yup, killin’ shimaNO 10s stuff.
It would have been nice to have their 'other than 11-34/HG800' 11s cogsets fit onto otherwise shimano 10s hubs...but alas...too bad shimano made their own 10s hubs and wheelsets obsolete, ......with no hope of modification ala a FHB.

I haven't adjusted my derailleurs for 5 or 6 years...

My beater commuter is a 7sp 105 Dawes with downtubes and fenders which lives outside, and that thing will just not die.
