View Full Version : Lame Celebrity Bikes

OK, so it's pouring down rain here in Austin, and I don't go to work until noon. What better way is there to pass the time, than to rant about celebrities and the lame bikes they ride. We all know that there are some out there (Robin Williams...) who have nice bikes. It seems like the r&f are always concerned about their cars, clothes and houses, but then they are photographed on bikes that most of us wouldn't ride to the coffee shop.

My first case study:

I'm not up on who's who in the world of celebrities. Who is that?

That's Madonna.

Here's Leonardo DiCaprio.

PS: Did anyone else see The Departed and think the ending was a little lame?

My first case study:

Other than the frame being small, it looks like a pretty functional setup.

the geriatric skank looks to be riding a functional city bike...and when you're loaded, you don't think twice about slapping an easton (carbon?) post on a commuter....

I think that outfit is the height of casual cyclewear, and she gets points in my book for not having a face lift.

She of course gets many +whatevers for her outfit. I would really like for dbrk to be her personal bike consultant though. I think he would do a wonderful job matching her clothing style to a proper bicycle.

Does that seatpost mean that madonna has long femurs?

not so bad--at least it didn't end happily (a happy ending isn't bad per se, but it wouldn't have been realistic in this film)

it wrapped up quick though

good to see Scorcese return to his roots after the foray into pictures like The Aviator and Gangs of New York (good imo, but this is the guy who did Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Casino)

the trailer for The Good Shepherd look good as well, I really liked A Bronx Tale (De Niro's directorial debut)

Madonna should get styling points for her road shoes, er, boots. and Leonardo... heck, that coulda been anyone! Who can tell with the face hidden?!

You of course know who this is?

Oh okay, you're talking about a bicyclist' bicyclist' bicycle, rather than an ordinary persons bicycle.

am i the only one noticing these people are not wearing helmets?

I recommend a heaping tablespoon of psylium every night.

You guys sound like those catty poofters on one of those tv gossip shows. I'm not a Madonna fan but I'd rather see a picture of her on a practical city bike than one of Kerry on his Serotta.

looks like a good city bike to me. practical . fender tail lights...and a black bike is always cool and will go with most any outfit. as far as fit who cares your in the city. what are you gonna max out at 10 miles round trip. if she were rokkin an ottrot that thing would be picked off the street. well unless she wrapped it in electrical tape... that is black as well....dave

Kerry uses more make up than Madonna.

There are two sides to this - no, make that three sides. So far I'm only seeing the outsider perspecive: "they have all the money in the world, how could they ride that?". There's also the celeb's perspective and then there's the motivations of the person who's selling the bike.

I have a customer who's a famous model. She wanted a "stylish" bike, but she wasn't interested in showing up a the bike shop. She's not a serious biker, so many of the things that forum members think about bikes don't make a difference to her. She has a Merlin Newsboy with a custom finish, a titanium wire basket, a titanium springer fork, a titanium bullet horn... I doubt she rides it much, but as my best customer I wasn't going to turn down the business. We take turns explaining things the other one doesn't give a rat's *** about. I explained to her how she should fit on the bike, she explained to me how a sunburn for a top model can cost a million dollars over 5 years...

We agreed to disagree on the helmet issue. She should wear one, but there's no way that's ever going to happen.

I am still surprised by American's attitudes about bicycles. How many people have you met who are fastidious about their clothing, car, home, etc, yet seem to have a perverse sense of pride based on the poor quality and appearance of their bicycle?

Isn't Madonna supposed to be the style icon of the whole of western culture? And isn't her husband one of those Central Park cycling fashionistas? At least take off the spoke protector, please!

What does this indicate about your attitude towards the bicycle (any bicycle)? How does a spoke protector affect functionality, utility?

How about that new Lincoln commercial with D. Wade? He shows up in his old neighborhood, helps the community kids by setting up a new backboard, giving them a bunch of basketballs, and then gives the car to his old coach. This is a great commercial, but he has to pull out some POS beat-up cruiser, and they show him riding away on it, looking pretty pathetic. You would think that celebrities would think about something better than that, but don't want to go extravagant (ex. the Ferrari Colnago or Emporio Armani city bikes). But COME ON! At least something better than a cruiser. Oh well, my two cents

My intended point (and aLexis' original point) was that many people are much less style-conscious about their bicycles than they are about other aspects of their lives.

I am quite the opposite - my clothes are threadbare, my car is dirty, and my house is a wreck, but my bicycle looks good!!

Check the saddle on that bike. She does that to you, atmo. He is a thug that Noriega loaned me to take care of her. He is an eunuch.

Cooooool. That picture is taken maybe 400 yards from my house. Walk past that bike maybe every other weekend.

Know what? It's not a runner. They just bring it out of the (ludicrously expensive) kitchen utensil shop in the morning and take it back in the evening. So, it's an aren't-we-a-cool-shop-with-a-porteur thing and it's all a put up job. Ah, Notting Hill. You've got to love it.....
