appreciate the streams - BUT really!!!! Two Wayfair ads in the closing 1.5km?!?! Seriously, I have made donations to the site, but why invest several hours in watching a race if they're going to pre-empt the finish with &^%#'ng Wayfair!!

i think he's probably ok...looked like he had enough time in the air to tuck n roll...that crash was WILD though, do hope he's ok.

Yeah he flipped all the way over, that was a nasty crash. At least he didn't land face first.

What a finish!

Ugh, yeah--it looked like Cavendish rode straight into the bollard.

Down to the last second there--I did not think Nibali was going to pull it off, but great finish. In the replay, it looks like he ALMOST sat up too early, but those angles can be deceptive.

I think Sagan is to the point where his refusal to work in the finale is costing him. He doesn’t want to bring anybody along so he sits up and the race goes away.

Brilliant victory by Nibali!

scary to see...but i think hes probably fine, his back is probably supremely unhappy but he landed about as well as you can possibly land in that situation (ie, not on your head).

Yeah but I bet he rather do a flip into a pool than a road at 35 MPH

Epic win by Nibali! I know what you mean but I was more worried about the shot with under 300m to go, he sure did looks like he was gonna get caught. As you said, those angles are very deceptive - he had 1-2 bike lengths in the end.

im always amazed by how chill these guys are about crashing.
i went down ONCE on pavement, at low speed, not racing, whacked my head and that was enough for me.

You must have missed the Sarcasm, in regards to Cav going down on his own last year during the Tour De France and Sagan getting disqualified. Sagan's elbow never connected..

To me, the clear cut sign that someone needs to hang it up, is when they lose race sharpness. Lance, Contador and now Cav. They lose the situational awareness that made them so great, and it feels like Cav is at that point. Contador was in the same boat, as was Lance. Just going down on stupid trivial things. I guess that's the equivalent of Father time in the NBA catching up to guys.

I love the quote from someplace I don't remember at the moment (2.5 negronis in, presently) but the gist was that the sprinters wanted to sprint while Nibali wanted to win. Whatever. Nibali is a hitter and I love his style.

Agree. No disrespect to Cavendish, but you have to wonder with the number of times he's hitting the deck. It appears to me that he's fixing to join that club of pro racers that just can't seem to keep the rubber side down, like you mentioned -7, Pistolero, and there's also Van de Velde plus a few others whose names escape me at the moment. Not all have been his fault, granted, but like you say it's that situational awareness thing.
No one likes to hang it up, but he's made a ton of bank over his career, probably got some nice endorsements plus his own line of bike stuff going - and most important - has a nice family at home.

I can't believe they don't protect/isolate those bollards better. Crazy.

What a great win by Nibali and a very nice telephone call (http://video.gazzetta.it/milano-sanremo-nibali-riceve-telefonata-merckx-la-vittoria/b712f6a6-2a07-11e8-93d2-1942400b66e2?vclk=home_generico|milano-sanremo-nibali-riceve-telefonata-merckx-la-vittoria) too.

Not quite the photofinish from last year but an exciting race. Kudos to Nibali and good to know Cavendish isn't seriously hurt, that crash looked quite bad. Does Nibali get enough respect? How many pro riders are there nowadays who win both tours and classics?

I found this waaay more exciting than the finish last year.

Wish Nibbles had a GoPro on his bars for that descent tho...

Loved the race. Nibali won on brains. As I get older, I come to appreciate that type of victory more. And Nibali constantly bumping elbows, shoulders, heads for the 20km preceding his attack in order to hold position. Excellent.

No he didn't. But he also didn't seem super motivated by the looks of it to chase down a friend and old teammate. He was busy keeping an eye on Kwaikowksi, trying to stay in position if they made the catch.

Nibali was a bit of a sleeper and played his hand well. Was glad to see him make it stick.

Both Sagan and Kwiatkowski decided to play more of a waiting game this year. Nibali was/is on form and hungry. I watched the last hour of racing on YouTube last night. Nibali was on or near the front, just waiting to pounce on the right opportunity. He rode to win, it was all or nothing for him. The other favorites watched each other while Nibali rode away. To quote Sagan, "I'm very happy for Vincenzo because only him showed the balls and he took a nice victory."
