Out on my cross bike today on single track along the American River and I see something that looks like a carbon frame flushed against a fallen tree in the river. Was able to walk on the fallen tree reach down just enough to grab the frame out of the water.
I can cut up and use the carbon.

Likely stolen, stripped and the frame dumped as traceable, sad!

Something fishy about that frame..

Beats anything I've found on the road. There's probably some guy missing his S-Works frame, though.

Tony, just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with the pieces you cut up?

OP: why cut the frame up if it is traceable? Why not try to find the owner? Even if the frame is damaged, he/she might want it back. Surely a local owner, no?

The serial number is removed, top tube, seat and chain stays are busted in several areas. The frame is garbage. The crank arms still spin ok!

Got it. Too bad.

So, yeah, what will you make out of it?

[QUOTE=Louis;2331539]Tony, just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with the pieces you cut up?

I've used pieces of carbon for many different projects. A years ago I found on the side of the road a carbon fiber bumper, it had many different shapes and angles that are useful, I made several mounts for cameras, armor on the keel (both bow and stern) for my skin on frame kayaks, thigh braces for cockpits, fabricated light weight parts for outfitting kayaks, making a combat paddle out of a broken Greenland paddle, made a folding backpacking table out of this bumper.

I've used parts of a carbon frame for a chain stay protector, it had the perfect shape. I've used parts of this same frame as armor for rock strikes on down tubes for a couple mtb bikes. Lots of different stuff, hanger, washers, pet licence tags....

This is the trail I was on when I found the frame.

You'll be surprised what you can find in rivers and along river banks. When I first started kayaking I spent a lot of time on the American river. I found a gun, dildos, flood light, sun glasses...... Once found a large sealed bag of weed (maybe half pound) washed up with litter against a fallen tree.

your re-use of the carbon is pretty amazing. And you obviously do a lot more with your free time than I do with mine....inspiring though!

i'm sure you know this Tony, as you appear to know what you're doing, but i hope you're taking appropriate respiratory precautions when you cut the carbon. CF dust is pretty bad for ya.

Yes, thank you, I do. I wear an approved mask and run a shop vac while doing all cuts and holes on the carbon.

I thought I should mention that this is the best carbon frame I've cut into. Lots of attention to details, no voids in any of the cuts, clean inside and no loose fibers.

Was anyone able to view the photos of the American river area where the frame was found?

I get a 404.
I live in the area, have seen whole bikes chained to trees down there but I stay away from the water so miss the gems that MattTuck has found.

A lot of stuff gets thrown off of the Foresthill Bridge into the North Fork of the river, even huge projectiles like engine blocks. And people throw themselves off almost every year, 700+ feet down.
