I just received a Columbus xCR stainless steel frame. As I was unpacking, I noticed some marks inside the bottom bracket. It looks like the marks coincide with where the downtube and the chainstays butt up to the bottom bracket.

Is this normal? Just wanted to check.

Thanks!

That is weld penetration from the joining of the tubes to the BB shell.

Is it normal? Sorry if it is an obvious answer; I have just never noticed weld penetration with any of my titanium frames.

Thanks.

As a layman, the best answer I can give is "yes."

That is where the heat from the adjoining tubes to the BB shell was concentrated. I see it all the time when welding at work. It means that there is good penetration into the base material. He may have been running a little hot but its no big deal.
SS is not real good at dissipating or spreading out the heat or weld zone. Carbon steel will spread the heat over a larger area and SS keeps it concentrated. Just the nature of SS.

That's some really neat welding around the BB. What frame/ who's the builder?

Not only is it normal, I would say it's ideal. Shows that there's good penetration into the metal. While this one is heavily penetrated a good weld should show some sign of distortion on the back side of the weld.

Thanks everyone for the feedback; just wanted to check and glad that all is well.

Yep! Except the seller had it done for me (though I need to touch up a couple small spots that the media blasting did not get; no big deal). And he even repainted the fork all black. Can’t say enough good things about the whole experience.

That’s awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing your full build!

It is difficult to tell with these pictures, but it looks like some pretty nice welds. Who did this frame?
