Searched and couldn't find -- I'm thinking about grey for a custom frame, but not 100% sold on it (thinking like an Audi Nardo Grey or Nimbus grey)

I really like the look of a gray like this with a few colorful highlights. It really makes the colors pop and looks awesome with a flashy colored king headset.

My gunnar Grand Tour is Toyota FJ Cruiser grey. Funny how I can be fairly serious about my photography but always take crappy pics of my bikes. Not my thing I guess.

but i think that you need a large surface area like a car to really show it off. doesn't seem to translate well to smaller tubes

I think I might be starting to agree.. i feel so beholden to doing something both cool and yet 'classic' enough that my taste won't change too quickly, as this is my first (and likely last for some time) custom. I'm often a black bike kind of guy, which I suppose is classic enough, but for some reason I think I need to do something "special" for this

i agree 100%. it's hard not to when ordering a frame.
to be completely honest, i spent more time and attention on the paint then i did on the frame geometry. that's probably backwards, but i trusted the builder and we had a good rapport so it worked out well. i let the builder deal with that and had more fun with the paint part of the process.
depending on who's building it, you could ask for some input from their painter. with my geekhouse, i had some general color palette preferences and let marty and jordan low come up with the final scheme. they'll know what works well with the style of frame.
