View Full Version : Scratched carbon fiber brake levers?

So I had one of those stupid spills like a track stand gone wrong, and I’ve scuffed one of my Campy carbon fiber brake levers. It’s not terrible, but enough that it took a bit of the ‘clear coat’ off, leaving a bit of exposed carbon fiber. My first thought was some clear fingernail polish, but I figured I’d check with the collective first. Any tips for repairing this? Thanks.

Clear nail polish would work. I've done it with spray clear coat. The key is sanding it flat afterwards and then using car finish polish/scratch remover to even it out.

That sounds like a lot of screwing around, but it actually goes fast with a small part like a lever because the clear is somewhat soft. With care it can be seamless.

I have some 4000 and 2000 grit sand paper I bought in a hobby shop, I sanded down the rough spots with lower grit then water sanded with th high grit and used an automotive clear coat. I happened to have all of the stuff from other projects-

never done it, but ran into this recently and it seems helpful for your situation. basically what Kontact described.

On Campy levers I've masked off chips and then built the clearcoat back-up with U-Pol (https://www.amazon.com/U-Pol-Products-0796-Clear-CLEAR/dp/B009LHER0M). Then it's just a matter of wet sanding back to a smooth finish.

Ive used nail polish, but it wears off on high contact areas. What about just using some clear 2-part epoxy with a small brush?

Spray-Max 2K (2-part) clear is even better. Easy to apply well, and very durable.
