View Full Version : Invite a lurker to lunch day

Ok, the title is stupendously lame, but the intent is true. I just saw these statistics about the typical lurker-to-contributor ratio on online forums.

All large-scale, multi-user communities and online social networks that rely on users to contribute content or build services share one property: most users don't participate very much. Often, they simply lurk in the background.

In contrast, a tiny minority of users usually accounts for a disproportionately large amount of the content and other system activity.
...
User participation often more or less follows a 90-9-1 rule:

* 90% of users are lurkers (i.e., read or observe, but don't contribute).
* 9% of users contribute from time to time, but other priorities dominate their time.
* 1% of users participate a lot and account for most contributions: it can seem as if they don't have lives because they often post just minutes after whatever event they're commenting on occurs.
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/participation_inequality.html

Now, I mention this only because I've gotten some terrific pm's from lurkers who don't post on the forum, but who, in my opinion, should. Their thoughts are every bit as articulate, thought-provoking, and downright helpful as those frequent posters whose contributions are on my "must read" list.

So, if you're a lurker who's hesitant to post, consider contributing here. It will make this forum an even healthier place. Don't post a response to this thread; instead, simply post a response in one of the existing threads. If you act like you've been there before, no one will notice that you've picked up a lunch tray for the very first time.

I didn't invite a lurker to lunch today...but I did send him a bunch of new restaurants to try in the Pontiac area...

Does that count?

this began as a perfectly reasonable, indeed interesting, thread. maybe what happened to this thread is why more lurkers don't post.

Mr. popularity I am not. Strange sense of humor a given. But, I am one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Who wants to do lunch?

Umm, in the upper right hand corner of each posting it says "number of lunch trays picked up" (or "posts" or whatever). I waited a few minutes to post to confirm that I indeed have a life. I've also hacked the system to assure my number never exceeds 200.

Whoa!!!! All along I thought that this number referred to a user's popularity rating (the lower the number, the higher the rating).

This thread is an excellent example of why lurkers stay lurkers.
I have found the information provided by the 1%ers on this board to be extremely helpful to me as I return to cycling. So thanks for letting me lurk.

Hey Firenze, for better or worse the direction, content, and ambience of this forum is determined largely by those who jump in and participate.

Since you mention that you're returning to cycling (as are lots of others here, I'll bet), you must have cycling-related questions or comments that are shared by many readers who would greatly appreciate someone who actually asks those questions or makes those comments.

P.S. Is your screen name based on the name of your bike, the place where you've cycled (or hope to cycle), or ...?
