True story.

But they were definitely more twitchy and bouncy on chipseal than the 28c.

Felt great climbing though.

I think my happy-medium is 25c on medium-width rims.

even better are veloflex master 25s.

I ride 23 tubulars and they are just fine.

But, you will die at some point and, maybe, the 23mm tires had a hand in that.

So funny you posted this at this time. I disassembled my rain bike this weekend and set up my backup with fenders which only has clearance for 28s when fendered. With no available 28s that fit I put on some old 25s to get me through the weekend.

Guess what? I didn't die and when taking into account road quality in these parts that's saying something. First time I've ridden <28s in over six years.

LOL the title made my day... glad you rediscovered 23c. Ive been a fan too, but NE roads can be pretty rough so I mainly ride 25s on the regular roadie. 25 is really the new 23 anyway, with similar weight and aerodynamic advantages paired with the right wider rim etc

happy riding

Agreed. I'm mostly running 25mm tubulars but still have a bike on 23s, over inflate and that can lead to danger, but find the right psi for your weight and its good.

I'm a big guy and have put some 23 Vittoria Corsa Elites on one of my bikes and I didn't die either! :help:

I like the Corsa Elites for cheap tubulars. They ride nice and are head and shoulders above Conti Sprinters...those have a horrible ride.

I must be really lucky, I've been riding them for years and still around!

I'm one of the few that can't tell the difference between 23's and 25's. I can tell differences in tire models (Veloflex Corsas are really plush, i.e.). That's about it. Call me lucky.

I only ride 23's. But our roads are very smooth.

I'm really tempting fate. I've been riding 23's for 25 years!
Not dangerous enough for you?
I also rode 20's for a few years when I got a great deal on some Axial Pro's in 20.

...and he lived to tell the tale...

I've got 23s on some wheels. 25s on some wheels. 28s on a few wheels. ...and 33s on others.

All are great in their own ways

I never raced on anything larger than 23mm tires.
At the time that is what people rode.

Doesn't mean I will go back to them in 2018.

interestingly, with the non-uniformity in tire sizing, i'm sure i have some 23's that actually measure larger than some 25's.

Do you think Vittoria Corsa G 23s would measure 25?

On Belgium+? Yep. But still short in volume, so I’d run 25c in those...and have done :)

Belgium + are wider than the C2s I have. I have 25s currently on mine..rode 30 today and they feel amazing. So comfortable. Sometimes they are so plush I wonder if I’m slower, not that it matters LOL.

I remember when I built up my 1st clincher wheelset...back in late 80's with 19mm tires.
Not hard to imagine...I hated them and went back to tubulars.

Funny how different it is nowadays.

yea, I survived against all odds. Now its 25s on wide clinchers, doesn't get any better ;)

Somewhere in my tire box I have a set of (gasp!) 700 x 20 Michelin Axial Pro Lites. I have 23 or 25s on all my bikes but my Cyclocross and Eroica bike.

I am really late to the "big rubber" bandwagon -- I only just tried something bigger than 23c two years ago when my Sachs arrived pre-shod with 25c tires. I liked the way that bike rode (ha! understatement) enough to keep putting 25c tires on it, but I just haven't been convinced there's anything significantly better about 25c to make me want to change my other bikes from 23c (and to be honest, one of them has so little clearance that it can't even accommodate 25c...which is a separate issue I really should address).

But I've been helping my wife spec a new Carl Strong all-road bike, and the tire options they're talking about sound really intriguing. [She'll wind up with two sets of wheels, one shod w/ 28c slicks and the other with 35c file tread.]

Maybe I need to consider a new platform so I can experiment with bigger tires and find out what all the hoopla is about? Hmm...Yeah, that'll happen right around the time when all the Cool Kids™ decide that 20c tires are the new big thing.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. But keep it up and somebody is gonna get their eye put out.

Remember, I told ya.

Ah yes, 23s on C2 would probably be close to 25c - I still don’t have a caliper or I’d measure them on the Shamals...
