Looking for value price wise, clearance for tires, and black for color. The Parlee carbon version looks awesome, but looking for other options too. Anyone have concerns about a clamp on front der scratching their frame? Any need for a shim just to protect the frame?

Campag..works for all front derailleurs. And adds some class to your bike. :)

My experience is that a carbon clamp increases ride compliance while maintaining lateral stiffness. The bespoke custom clamps seem to improve shifting & ride quality. ;)

I've always used whatever came with the derailleur, I wasn't aware they were standard. Pretty sure both the bikes I have with clamps do require a shim as well.

....add carefully cut/sculpted piece of cloth handlebar tape between frame and clamp. Electrical tape works fine too if clearance is tighter.

Anyone have concerns about a clamp on front der scratching their frame? Any need for a shim just to protect the frame?you could. but unless you ever plan on removing the FD and running the bike as a 1X setup, or hanging the frameset on a wall someday, you'll never see that area again.

one bike I have the Campy clamp, the other is either integrated into the Ultegra FD or it's a Shimano clamp. all my other bikes are 1X.

the Shimano ones have worked well for me in the past, and they're cheap enough. if this is for your Moots, you should consider the Sram one. it works really well with their chain catcher, but it is expensive.

There are other front derailleurs? :)

I like the way these off-brand ones look with lightening slots, and they work well. I apologize that they are dirt cheap.

Omni Racer or Parlee, both are great.
- easy on your frame/paint
- stiff enough for all shifting systems
- increased tire clearance
- easily slip under bottle cages (in between bosses) on smaller frames
- look nice

Same as the ones I linked above. Agree 100% on the appearance/effectiveness/price assessment. A definite bargain in the cycling world.

Whatever way you go, put a dab of assembly paste in there before you mount, align and torque to spec. Makes setting up a bit easier - the tooth provided by the paste helps it stay in place with less clamp force while adjusting. Also keeps it from moving around over the long haul.

I have Shimano and a Parlee. Both work very well. Love the Parlee as it kind of blends in to my clear coated carbon.

Campagnolo - newer, EPS marked model on Ti frame.

Campagnolo - older silver on aluminum frame. No problems with either.

Problem Solvers - tons of adjustment in case brazeons get in the way of fitment.

I have to say, I thought the parlee clamp was going to be crap... but since it was a parlee, I bought a parlee clamp. It is absolutely excellent. Adds tire clearance cuz its so thin, looks good, its super light. It is however not cheap :)

There are copys like omni, fairwheel, ect... can't comment on those but the parlee one is excellent.

Also have had the campy one, works fine but on a carbon bike, I feel better torquing the carbon clamp for some reason, the metal ones make me cringe when I am torquing them down on carbon. So I say, carbon, parlee, metal bike campy.

I have had good luck with the Problem Solvers and SRAM adapters.

I usually use a Shimano clamp for a Shimano front derailleur, a SRAM for their front derailleur and Campy for their front derailleur. The only exception would be if none was available, such as if I need a clamp for a steel frame and many companies don't make such a clamp size. I try to avoid shims.

So if ordering a new custom steel frame do you go with a braze on or clamp?

Surprised how many people are recommending Parlee. I tried it for ~100 miles on a Seven demo bike and recall it flexing a quite a bit on upshifts, resulting in more hand effort. Not nice, regardless of whether that clamp flex energy was returned to the drivetrain as forward movement :)

The way things are getting weird with front derailleurs and component compatibility in general, I would be disinclined to go with a braze on.

Which is a shame, because a braze on mount is one of those cool extras that make customs awesome. But I do think they work well on steel frames.

Shimano Di2 front derailleurs have the support screw that works well with the Shimano Di2 specific derailleur clamps. There is a little flat protrusion on the adapter band that the screw presses against. No need to use that little sticky metal support plate.

Clamp on always...gives you WAY more adjustability. PLUS, before it's asked, yes, lots of good 28.6mm clamps available. PLUS less stress on tube w/o having to weld a bracket on there.

+1 omni makes a cheaper priced carbon clamp. I've use it and the parlee.

On mechanical front derailleurs, I use the Parlee. Doesn't scratch the paint as badly, will break before you overtighten and crease tubes, allows for a touch more clearance for cages and tires.
OnDi2, I use the shimano clamp. in my experience, you need the extra beef for the electronic front derailleur
