Very nice! How do you like the ride? I have one of these waiting to be built up. Just waiting on the group set to get here for the build. I had a chebacco that was too small for me, but loved how well it rode. It inspired me to find a Parlee that was the proper fit.

I have two carbon bikes, an Argon-18, and a Focus Izalco.

The Focus never really got ridden much, probably because i built it with a bunch of parts bin stuff that never really shifted perfectly, and i never got the front end fit dialed in.

i think this summer i am going to completely rebuild it with some new parts and get the fit correct and put some miles on it.

Its a great bike, it really is. Super comfortable, stiff where it matters, climbs well. I am very into it. Also its so well built, paint job is quality. I understand why people love parlees.

Yes Parlee makes a top level carbon bike. I've owned carbon bikes from cdale, trek, giant and guru. None of those road as well as the Chebacco. I think the liveliest was the supersix evo, but still prefered my steel and ti bikes over it. I have high hopes for the z5 and I'm pretty sure it won't dissapoint.

Pic is from when it was brand new. I have long since added clipless pedals, changed the bars, lost the gigantic saddlebag, and removed the dork disc, in case you were concerned.

It’s fast. Right after I built it up I had a rash of PR’s on Strava segments.

Total price for the build was just over 1800.

I love the 29+ tires. I run them 12-14 psi, so they wrap around and grip the rocks. I am amazed at tech sections that it climbs.

In two years of about three rides a week, I broke the rear hub. The freewheel locked.

I like the matte carbon look. About 24 lbs.

Dang, haveta ask... whats it weigh? that thing is minimalist!

I've never actually put the whole bike on a scale. Frame with headset and bb bearings, hangar and cable guides is 760g -- so bare frame is ~660g. Cut fork is 278g. Stem is Extralight at 83g. Wheels are tubular which makes big difference.

I also have a moots compact. Definitely heavier but I don't really mind unless I'm hurting on a climb.

Those are not clinchers, correct?

They are Shamal clinchers. If I switched to Super Record, I could probably drop some more weight - there's a mixture of Super Record, Record, Athena and SRAM (brakes). I have a Eriksen titanium road that weighs about the same at 15.0 lbs but is kitted out in all Super Record.

I have owned several CF bikes since they first started coming out (e.g. Giant Cadex, Trek Madone) and like the Parlee the most. Stiff enough for quick acceleration yet more lively feeling than many others - just the right amount of flex in the right places. It's subjective but I have owned many, many high-end bikes and my bike lust stopped at Parlee and Eriksen.

2008 Colnago "Extreme-Power" team frameset: Rabobank for Paris-Roubaix.

I don't have any good images of this one built up yet, but I love it.

Confirmed by Alessandro Colnago as one of four Rabobank-ordered back-up E-P frames specifically for the 2008 Paris-Roubaix, basically built with a slightly beefier overall spec than the standard E-Ps of the time.

I have tried to find out which Rabo rider this one was ordered for, but to no avail. It may have been Joost Posthuma, but I'm really not certain at all...several of the riders on the '08 Rabobank P-R roster are as tall as I am.

Thanks very much.

I do love it, but I need to photograph it well fully built one of these days. I will do so, and post a new thread on April 7 in honor of the 2018 P-R! :)

Campagnolo 2010 S-R; Shamal dark label/Veloflex Corsa Blacks; PMP hs/Deda Superleggero/Deda Campione/Fizik 2mm white; Colnago sp/Fizik Arione CX black with white center stripe. I tried to keep it within the original Rabobank P-R aesthetic: very simple and pragmatic, only black and white...except, of course, for no Shimano.

@joostx: I really do not like the color red, or even more so red bicycles, typically. Your Festka is one of the few exceptions; that bicycle is really sublime, and the two photos you posted on page 1 are always gorgeous.

The pictures are not up to date but these are some of the nicer ones I have at the moment. I am often playing around with different saddles, seatposts and stems but no worries, the classic bend will always be there ;) The tan hoods are also mostly gone for now ...
The groupset on the EP is the same today, allthough I swap in a compact 4-arm when doing a lot of climbing (eg. Giro delle Dolomiti). The C40 has a Record 10s groupset now, which is really my all time favorite. I will most likely put a 10s Record/Chorus mix on the C50 as well and put the DA group on a cx bike if I can find a nice canti Boone 54 cm frame.

Nick, did you not receive the memo?

It did indeed state, "...they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,..."
It did NOT state, "...and their ploughshares then into beautiful carbon-fiber frames...".

I'm guessing that you didn't receive it.

Hence the untilled field.

This was a fairly recent Craigslist grab, it was a very popular bike when new back around 2006.

It's on the big side (I'm pretty far forward), but is still good for higher-intensity rides under four hours. It does have a ride-tuned feel to it, not harsh-feeling over our rural pavement.

Cyfac International is a manufacturer of bicycles in La Fuye, in the Loire Valley of France. The name is an acronym that translates from French to "Handmade Bicycle Frames". "Cy" represents cycle (bicycle), "f" for fabriqué (made), "a" for "artisanal" (artisan), and the final C stands for cadres (frame).

Checked out this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oLsMFVQK3g&t=295s).

That is a 130mm negative 17 degree stem. Those Hylex levers are indeed extra long compared to other shifters.

If those are neuvation wheels I’d strongly suggest trying different wheels before judging the bike too harshly. I had a set of m28 Aeros or whatever they were called and they rolled like absolute doo compared to even fulcrum racing 5.

they are indeed old neuvation wheels. they're on the bike really as foul weather wheels, but i will indeed be trying some other wheels on this bike. i've never really given it any fair amount of time on the road. once i update some parts to make it shift correctly and get different wheels/tires on it i'll give it a better evaluation.

What do you think of your 585 Ultra?

I posted this in another thread a while back ago when discussing lugged carbon frames...
For me (and I'm no expert), I feel like most of the ride qualities is based on the geometry, more so the differences in the carbon usage and/or design.

Time VXR has a steeper HTA and slacker STA which I happen to prefer. It also has a very tight rear end and so it seems to respond quicker to accelerations. When I first road this, I thought the back end was going to be too stiff, but I haven't found that to be the case at all. It really does handle the best (IMHO) of the three. The only downside it is a hair bigger than what I would call my perfect size.

The C-50 has a slack HTA with a 43mm offset fork which makes for some interesting trail numbers. Honestly, when I first rode this I did not like the way the front end handled. I have gotten used to this and it's super stable at faster speeds, but it still isn't my preferred geometry configuration. The size is perfect and I love the look of it. It doesn't seem as quite snappy as the VXR, but responds quick enough when you mash on the pedals.

Finally the Look 585 Ultra. I was actually helping a friend find a bike and he was looking at the 585/595 and I really didn't know much about them and started reading what I could to give him an informed opinion. The more I read, the more I wanted to give this bike a try. So when one popped up on the forum I decided to go for it. I built this up for climbing in the mountains of North Georgia and I must say it performed wonderfully. I was a bit nervous taking an unknown quantity to descend down the mountains at 40+ mph, but I had no problems at all. It has a slightly slacker HTA (73 deg) and uses a 43mm offset fork when a lot of bikes with this HTA use a 45mm offset. It also climbs nicely and feels very efficient so that most of your power is pushing you forward. I went with a medium which has a 54.5mm effective top tube length and it's the shortest one I own, but it too fits very nicely.

One negative for both the C-50 and 585 is the steepish STA which force me to push my saddle most of the way back (I have longish femurs) and I wouldn't mind finding a seatpost with more offset, although the C-50 uses a non-standard seatpost size of 28.0mm.

In summary, my opinion strictly based on the ride & handling is that the VXR > 585 Ultra > C-50. But you know what they say about opinions

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Is lugged only an aesthetic thing or does it contribute to ride?

I am not sure what else the lugging brings to the table but at least with this crowd it brings a sort of hand made feel which is what people like here it seems.

I actually like the C40 more. It's hard to explain. They're both great riding bikes. However, the C40 has a slight edge and just feels better. I've struggled to quantify what it is that differentiates them, but I just enjoy the C40 more. This is my 3rd C50 and 3rd C40. Interestingly, I've liked all of the C40s more than the C50s.

I haven't tried a 59 or 60 yet. They're still above the pricepoint that I'm willing to pay given my level of satisfaction with the C40s and C50s. I just don't see a ton of upside moving to one of the newer C series yet.

I've had a couple of wheelsets on the C50 - Kysrium SL Premiums, DT240s laced to DT rims, and probably something else that I can't remember. I've been happy with the Eastons, but probably should try a couple of other wheelsets. I'm not unhappy with the C50, it's just that I like the C40 a bit more. To your point, however, a wheelset can make a BIG difference.

Yeah, I saw it and had to have it for myself. My wife even gave me a pass on it because it was so purdy. The paint is pretty over the top stellar for a production bike and is amazing in the sun. Too bad it doesn't get out in the sun often enough

@mcfarton Of course I had to tell my wife all about Sagan and show her some videos. She loved some of the more fun ones and then proceeded to fall asleep like she does with most cycling videos.

You could mix it up as needed/wanted, since the pewter matches the lettering. A mix of both would still coordinate nicely.

My vote is keep the black CK SV headset.
And get a black seatpost clamp, Campagnolo asymmetric preferred if it fits.
Red, pewter (fades really badly, starts to look lavenderish) or even ti will look cheesy on such an elegant bicycle.
Matching the hubs to the headset would be cheesy too.
I have no idea why I'm thinking about cheese so much...I'm neither a mouse nor hungry, but...cheesy it would look, imo.

:)

The red hubs are fine, spinning, and just that small touch of red/pop, like in a Corot painting.

Here's my Trek Domane in it's current guise.. got this in 2016 and had put some old wheels on it, I got the Ksyriums for it last summer when the old wheels died. Kind of an odd custom build. It's got Zipp bars, Arione VS saddle, 10-speed Ultegra w/Stages PM.

I made some big improvements to fit and was able to change the stem out and go to quite a bit more drop and reach this spring. I got this bike outside yesterday (April 1st) for the first time in 2018 and it was pretty amazing after 400+ miles in March on my 25lb+ All City Space Horse. So fast/smooth/light/responsive, blah, blah, blah. Of course now it's snowing today so this is probably going to go back inside for a little while and it's back to the donkey.

I think you're right. I had a 2012 version of the Ultimate CF SLX and a current version. I much preferred the older geometry. It just handled better, was more stable, just better overall. I think it was because the 2012 had less of a sloping top tube and slightly more weight.

So a few weeks ago I finally completed this build of a lovely frame I bought here. Not having bought a bike in over 10 years, and never owning a carbon bike, I thought maybe it was time to pick one up. Having lusted after Cyfacs and Sartos, but never having an affordable one come up in my size, Liberace posted this Merlin Empire (Sarto built) here at a great price. It was practically new, and very carefully packed, so thanks again to a great seller. So far, it is a blast to ride - comfortable yet responsive. Not trying for a weight weenie build (Chorus 11, Zondas, Zipp SC SL bits), but came to almost exactly 16 lbs. for a 57 cm. frame, which is not bad. All the black and grey is a bit dour, but I can live with that!

Tell us more about the Allied. interesting young company.

dhalbrook
05-03-2018, 09:52 AM
Well, I like what Allied is trying to do (a US made high-end carbon frame). Not much I can tell you that you can't read about in the press, except my experiences dealing with them and how the frame rides.

The ordering process was pretty simple, but unfortunately somewhere wires got crossed and they sent me the wrong paint scheme (I had wanted the "fade to carbon", but the first frame was entirely silver). When I pointed this out they were very responsive and got a new frame in the pipeline right away, and so I shipped the original one back.

Building the frame up was pretty straightforward, with the exception of the chainstay cable routing.. that was a pain. Ride quality is marginally rougher than my Calfee (pretty much everything is), but only slightly, and this is a size down with a shorter wheelbase so it could simply be that. Handling is a bit quicker, and it's loads stiffer. It built up to be about 1/2 lighter than the Calfee as well, and the Dragonfly was already a very light frame.

So far, I'm digging it. This weekend is a nice, hilly race in our area (Montinore Road Race) so that should be a good test.

Just picked up today. 2018 BMC Roadmachine 2 Two. Highlights are the extrodinary engineering that created a bike that is a joy to ride and is also quite "racy." The mechanical Ultegra r8000 is exceptional. It comes on tubeless wheels with 28mm tires. The discs were something I have been resisting, but, I think they're going to a good in the long term. The stopping power and modulation is confidence inspiring.

This was purchased to be my every day bike for the next decade to replace a well loved TCR, and I think I'm going to be happy with the decision.

This was purchased to be my every day bike for the next decade to replace a well loved TCR, and I think I'm going to be happy with the decision.Congrats. I have a BMC SCL-01 that is just now about a decade old (posted somewhere above). Still an awesome ride...

First carbon bike in a while.

I've been hearing a lot about the Canyon's. How do you like it? Ride...weight?

Thanks!

I've been hearing a lot about the Canyon's. How do you like it? Ride...weight?

I like it. It definitely is a race bike. Short head tube and plenty of saddle to bar drop. A little aggressive geometry with 73.5 degree seat and head tube angles. Handling is solid and not twitchy even with these angles. Fairly comfortable with the 28mm Corsas. I am not a weight weenie and don’t weigh my bikes but I would guess this is around 17lbs since I switched out the Mavic Cosmic Pro wheels for some sweet i9/Reynolds wheels (thanks ColnagoFan) that ride real nice and are about 300 grams lighter. It’s kind of fun to ride something that is still fairly unique in the US. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase and think it’s a quality product (even with some complaints listed below), well appointed, and a good price.

On the flip side. I am not sure about their business model and service. Maybe chalk this up due to the fact that this is a new venture in the US. It’s not like Burger King...you can’t have them your way. They really need to let people switch out parts to dial in fit. They must be selling bikes because they have almost zero inventory available to sell on their website unless you are a xxs or xxl. Make sure you understand your fit needs before purchasing, including how details like frame angles will impact your fit.

Also, the assembly instructions were weak. There is a part that only requires one newton meter of torque (which wasn’t specified in the manual) and my torque wrench broke the part at two newton meters. The customer service guy admitted their assembly instructions were poor and they are in the process of updating them. The expander plug also broke when I removed the top cap to adjust the spacers. I paid an extra $100 to overnight the bike for a trip and these two problems wasted that expense. They agreed to send the new parts overnight at their expense. Unfortunately, the sent the replacement broken part but didn’t send the expander plug. I called them at 2:00 pst to remind them they needed to send the plug and the recording said they accept service calls until 5:00 pst but knocked off early for the day. I left a message and never heard back from them...a week later the expander plug showed up without warning. I had already paid a mechanic to fix it for me. The did include a free T-shirt and hat for my trouble. I left an email for their GM to give him some input from a paying customer and never heard from him.

Probably too much info but thought I would include the big picture. It’s a high quality bike that rides great, the assembly instructions are weak and can get you in trouble, make sure you get the fit right since the bikes can’t be modified (to be fair, you can send it back and exchange it within a certain time frame), and customer service is lacking. YMMV.

Interesting, my experience with them was very positive. Called ahead to discuss shipping time. I only moved some spacers around to get the fit dialed (I don't have the one piece bar/stem, but more a $$ decision, I didn't want to pay $700 for it and the Mavic wheels). I didn't really look for assembly instructions, though, it was straight forward, bike was tuned well and been happily riding. Ultegra 8k (and DT swiss wheels mine came with) are great so far, and love the handling. I have the Ultimate disc 8.0 in blue, which looks good in person, takes wide tires (put 28s on, can go 32s at least)..

Glad your experience wasn’t as frustrating as mine. Maybe my experience was a one off. Ultimately, I am happy with the purchase and enjoy riding the bike which I think is high quality and good value.

A pair (could that be called a Loo?) of Looks!!

No ride today, just took time out to make them clean and sparkling.

Since they are freshly clean, all you get are late evening 'garage door' shots.

Love my Looks!! 1697960990169796099116979609921697960993

I guess I never posted my one C.F. bike here either.

I found this listed weirdly on EBAY last winter as a NOS frame for what was a great price for one of these. Built it up with an Ultegra 11 speed groupset I got for cheap and with some Fulcrum Racing Zero wheels I had on hand. Certainly not something you see out and about each day.

To use the parlance of an earlier time.... That bike is totally aMaZeBaLLs. A stone cold stunner indeed.

I wish it were 1x and the rear brake were under the chainstays, but that's just me sitting on the couch thinking only about decluttering.

Got this when they first did the Altum. I decided that I wanted to pay homage to Canada so I had them paint it in Candy Apple Red and Pearl White sorta like the Maple Leaf.

Sadly, it may have to get sold when the new bike comes which the rest of the family doesn't know about yet.
