Clicked on a member's website and got pop-up window with an audio message that says I must call 800 803-1466 for Microsoft tech support or my computer will be disabled and a complaint lodged against my IP address. Scam?

Message says my computer is infected with pornographic spyware that is sending my email log-ins, financial information, etc. to an unknown IP address.

Error # 0x80072ee7

I got one that said that my computer is infected with the ZEUS virus and I should call Microsoft 877 number. If I ignore the alert then my computer will be
blocked. It smelled like a scam so I deleted the Firefox process via Task Manager in order for the alert to go away. I also double check with our IT team and they also confirmed that this was a scam.
Be sure not to click on any links and not to provide anyone access to your computer.

Yep. It's been around awhile. velobaba did the right thing. kill it without the normal clicks and don't click on anything. If you're still wary, boot up in safe mode and run a few different virus scans, HitmanPro, Malwarebytes, etc.

What you have to do if you use firefox is to put Ublock origin... that will do the trick.

Thanks for that tip. I just replaced ABP with uBlock. We'll see how it goes.

Just so you guys know, don't do like my wife. Never click on sponsored or promoted links on anything.
I hate it when she uses my computer or hers and she runs to me panicked with her computer showing a screen that claims to have a virus and ahe is instructed to click a link or call a number.

Scam scam scam scam scam. (Sung to the tune of Monty Pythons Spam skit)

She's gonna wind up with a real virus if she doesn't stop that.

I have warned my not-so-tech-savvy wife many times about not clicking on something she doesn't know about, and now she's a little paranoid about clicking on anything and will check with me if she's unsure.

All is wab based now so pretty much the guys use pop ups, if you block them you will be safe (almost all the time), the nice about you block is that blocks any connections linked to the web site you are watching specially trackers because those just slow the browing big time, since it use a filter that is updated dialy the chances to get the MS Scam windows are reduced largely. Ublock origin does exactly that.

disconnect plugin, ublock plugin, use duckduckgo as your search engine, and you should be good. Or at least a lot better than you would be otherwise.

Malware has gotten really good, and ad networks are serving up malware regularly. My favorite is the variety that takes over your computer and mines for cryptocurrency.

If you surf for porn, a locked down browser on a linux virtual machine is the only way to go. At least that's what I hear.

Got a message that says it's not compatible with my version of Firefox.
