Hey Paceline,

There's still not a ton out there when I google search 1X stuff for road and mixed terrain use. There's a bit, but its so anecdotal, and lots of the opinions are obviously from people who haven't tried it. I'd love to compile some info from the brain trust here on 1x riding.
Im interested in your experience specifically with 1X good and bad. I know it has its fans and haters, but i don't want to hear your theoretical hate, or what you read on radavist or wherever, because if you haven't tried it, you haven't tried it. And photos, lots of amazing and cool photos of 1X bikes in rad, off the beaten path places, or at the coffee shop.

Yes, I am building a 1X bike to try out soon, i just want to learn more!

my first cx bike was "traditional" in the sense that it had cantis, 46/36 with a road cassette in the back, and no clutch der.
my new cx bike still has cantis, but now it has a 42 in the front and an 11-42 mtb cassette in the back with a clutch der.
the 1x1 bailout gear is nice on the steep stuff. badadadada im lovin in.

I’ve got a few. Haven’t used FDs in years.

This is my winter ride. 1x9 with a bar end shifter.

The Haanjo is 1x10. 40t front ring with 11-36 cassette. Gearing works well unless your racing.

Just finished this up. 1996 Fat Chance. Using a thumb shifter in friction mode to run the 1x10 drivetrain.
42t ring with 11-34 cassette.

I have a Litespeed Unicoi (YBB softtail) converted to a drop bar 1x10, with an Ultegra STI shifter, Shimano XT non-clutch rd, 38T chainring, and 11-40 Sunrace Cassette. Conti Speed King 26x2.2 tires make it and on/off road bike ideal for the mixed trail and paved riding we have here. It has a chain keeper on the front.
I converted my CAAD10 to 1x11 with a 6800 STI shifter, and Ultegra R8000 rd with the 11-34 Ultegra cassette. 42T NW chainring, no cluch derailleur or chain keeper as this a road-only maxhine. It's my lightest bike at 16.75 pounds. Gear range is fine for the riding I do, almost all solo, no pack riding.

Oh im already well on my way. i am just a frame away from being there!
So Far:
Whiskey Mid reach fork
TRP 957 mid reach brakes
Easton sl90 42T crankset (also have 50-34 spider for if i don't like the 1x)
SRAM Force 1X shifters and long cage RD
10-42 XD cassette on Hed Ardennes: gravel set
11-36 cassette on another wheelset: TBD

1x 10.

11-36 cassette with 38t upfront. On the flats I'm mostly in the 14t cog on the rear. The only thing I miss is having a 13t cog. In the hills the spread in the gears are fine. Spin out on big downhills but I'm fine with that.

Three wheelsets: 650x2.1/2 for the heavy gravel/singletrack. 650x47 for light gravel. 650x42 for the road.

No racing.

1x11 (48 x 11-40)

Great for “all-road” riding. I can get up all short steep hills we’ve got in Central MO. The 48x11 gives me all the high end I need. Only time I notice the jumps is when I’m in a larger group and I’m not dictating the pace/cadence.

No more racing for me so am trying 1x. I have only ridden it twice so far so my views may change.

SRAM rival 1 with 105 crank and wolf wide/narrow oval 40 tooth. 10x42 cassette.

So far very happy with it. I was worried about big jumps between gears but that hasn’t bugged me so far.

Very smooth and quiet and nice not having to think about when/if to go in little ring.

Lots of fun. Wears a variety of shoes(wheels).

What i've found on the gearing is that I don't need more than about 42x11-36 myself. I've considered going wider range, but haven't yet found a need based on my riding. When I lived up in Peoria, IL I was in and out of the river bottoms with it and own every gravel road without any issues. That may change if I move to an area with more hills, or I'm spending more time on rolling gravel roads. Might bump to a 11-40 cassette instead and swap the der over to a mid-cage.

For allroad riding I don't think the jumps are a big deal, at least it's never bothered me. For a longer road ride I don't think I would like it, though.

In case anyone is interested in a 58cm, there is one for sale locally that looks essentially new. I have no connection, but a buddy does and is trying to convince me to buy it. I have a ti Desalvo, so I will stick with that, but it is a nice bike for sure.

It was seriously cold in stockholm today. Easily the worst day this winter (thus far :) )

I am getting along pretty great with my 46 x 11-42
I hear its not low enough for "real" gravelgrinding", and perhaps that is true but stockholm is pretty flat and i rarely even use the 2 biggest cogs even when going up some pretty steap stuff but that is mostly asphalt so yeah different thing..

I do think the jumps on the cassette is a bit big but i also got use to it pretty fast.

The compass 38s have proven to to be awesome. No punctures in a couple of months of everyday grinding and pretty sublime ride with no real drawbacks untill today. As most would have guessed they are not great on icy roads but my previous experience with just a tad of snow here and there was so good that i thought perhaps they could handle this as well. But i learnt they cant as i went down 3 times today (at ridiculously low speeds).

If i could build it again i wouldent change a thing hmm well maybe i would have gone with a 44t but that may be less optimal in spring.

Oh the bottom bracket is pretty nice on a pf30 frame. Ethirteen threaded like a praxis or similar. No creaks n works great with the easton crank if you decide you need a pf bb for your easton cranks at some point.

I got an email that construction is done and its being polished and brushed.
Its Ti and bult just for this purpose, will shred multiple surfaces, and will weigh very little, and thats all I'll say about that for now.

Now its winter and i broke a couple ribs yesterday, so no riding for a bit, which means i need to shop for the perfect set of goldilocks tires. Looking for 30-35mm clincher and some traction, i have 32mm Compass tires to use for most stuff, but i need a second gravel set with some traction, but still very road capable. Was looking at some of the newer Challenge offerings like the Almonzo, but cats round here and elsewhere have been having a lot of issues it seems. Are the G series tires from Schwalbe the next thing to try for a bit of traction? or perhaps something new from Donelly/Clement? seems they have some new offerings?

Depending on your dirt/pave mix, maybe MSOs, GravelKing SKs, or Cross Boss? If you are willing and able to go a little bigger than 35, then the Riddler is a nice tire.

I really like the Vittoria Terreno Dry tire. I have the 40mm on my Foundry. I just picked up a set of the G-ones in 38mm to try too. The Vittorias roll great, set up tubeless very easily and ride really well. I would expect the G-ones to be similar if not a bit faster. Challenge are great and I have the 33mm Strada Biancha and the 38mm Gravel Grinder Race but neither is a tubeless tire. The Clement/Donelly tires all seem really heavy.

Hope you heal up quickly!

My Raleigh Willard 2, running SRAM 1x 11spd mix of Apex cranks and RD and Rival shifters. Gearing is a 38t chainring w/ an 11-42 cassette. The bike has been exactly what I wanted - I live in LA without a car, so I needed a bike that could do fire roads/light single track while not feeling TOO sluggish on pavement. This does exactly that for me. I thought that the gearing would be too low, but it's also proven to be just about perfect for what I'm doing with the bike - sure, I spin out the 38/11 "big" gear on downhills, but so what? It just means I get more aero-tuck practice ;)

Even after a year the bike is almost all stock - except the wheels. It came with a super heavy wheelset (over 2300g!) with Clement Xplor MSO 40mm's, which I really grew to hate - they just always felt slow, unless pumped up past 70psi, which kind of defeated the whole point of the bike. Now running a custom-built wheelset (Novatec centerlock hubs, H Plus Son Hydra rims, Sapim Leader spokes - around 1650g), set up tubeless with Schwalbe G-One 38's. So far, I'm loving TL, and kicking myself for not dong it sooner.

geez, those tires are massive! how did you like that gearing? 40 up front?

how was the ride on pavement with that massive rubber?

Tires are 2.1 650b Schwalbe Thunder Burts. I rented one two weekends ago from AC in Sausalito, then went for a mixed road/trail ride in the Marin Headlands. It was my first time with a 1x drivetrain and also on 650b wheels. I must admit, I REALLY liked this bike. Both the 1x and 650b's were pleasant revelations. The gearing gaps on the 1x weren't as big as I feared, and the 650bs were quicker on the road than I would've guessed. When I got back to AC, I had them switch to a 700 x 44 compass tire and decided I liked the 650bs better. They felt faster on the road, but maybe that was because it was late in the day and I was more worn out.

For those following the OPEN UP thread, sorry for the cross post.

Norco Search XR. Love this bike. Right now I’m running 2.1” Maxxis tires and with the dropper post it descends steep switch backs amaziny well. For normal gravel rides and races I really like the WTB Byway tires pictured.
