Hey guys,

I have my regular clincher tire mounted to my wheel and want to hit the trainer for a 40min HIIT work out. My question is I don't want to mount my trainer tire when I know I am going to ride outside in a couple days. Is it OK to use my regular clincher tire for say 2x15mile sessions? Or will it destroy the tire yielding it useless for outside use come Saturday.

Equipment run down (if it matters:)

Tire: Veloflex Corsa 25mm Clincher
Wheel: Campy Zonda
Trainer: Kinetic Rock and Road

Cheers! and as always thanks in advance

I have a Kinetic trainer as well. My normal road tire ended up embedded with a solid stripe of fine metal particles somehow. Didn't smell great either.

I suggest buying a cheap wheel, cassette, and Conti Hometrainer tire for trainer use.

Different set-up than you and I’ve had it go well and... not so well

Yea I already have a schwalbe trainer tire I'm just being lazy. I have to get a cheap wheel at some point.

I think for one ride it won't hurt the tire, go for it.

I wouldn't recommend it, but you'll be fine. A 40 min ride won't thrash your tire. It's like warming up before a race

My issue with my tacx smart was I couldn't get the trainer to calibrate correctly with a normal tire: some old clincher I was using. Kept failing cal. Based on someone's suggestion here I bought a tacx trainer tire and the issue was immediately solved.

You won't hurt your tire in the trainer for one ride though, go for it

Yeah, a cheap wheel is the way to go. Have a shimano 11 if you want, with a trainer tire mounted.

Generally 30 miles on a trainer not too big a deal, but boy a Veloflex Corsa; every rotation would stab me in the liver.

Thanks guys just finished up and not much dust at all and the tire didn't explode! Thanks again for the advice.

I got a computrainer in 1996, and I don't recall any trainer tires being available back then. It was recommended that you wipe down the rear tire with alcohol soaked rag to let the trainer calibrate correctly. I did some experiments with the calibration setup which was based on a coastdown from a certain speed and the values did change with a clean tire.

Yep. Never have to worry about excessive tire wear. Or countless repetitive frame flexes.

This time of the year it's much more likely for me to wonder if a 'short ride' in the mostly dry, but salty, gritty and sandy roads of the upper Midwest will do any damage to one of my nice road bikes...

I bought a cheap frame on CL and built it up with spare parts for my trainer. No fussing with changing wheels or tires, or worrying about frame flex... :)

Y'all do know about "N+1", right? That equation covers trainer bikes too!

I wouldn't use a nice tire like a Veloflex on a trainer. Get some cheap tire and use that - easier to do if you have a spare wheel to swap in and out. I bought some Maxxis Detonators (love that name for a tire) for $10 and can't wear them out on my trainer (Performance branded fluid trainer clearly made by Elite).

I had a buddy use a brand new Continental GP4000II on the trainer for 1-2 hard sessions and it already wore out enough to create a flat spot. He wasn't too happy about that.

But a dedicated trainer wheel is the way to go. I always hated mounting the trainer tire and messed up a few tubes in the process before. Now I have one of those Kool Stop tire bead jacks and it wouldn't bother me to change them out anymore using this tool. I actually picked it up because I have a wheelset of HED Jet+ rims for my TT rig and just can't seem to mount a tire without a lever (too afraid to damaged the fairings so can't get enough leverage). This made it much easier overall actually.
