So, I decided to go ahead and keep the Boulder Road Sport (https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=218075), and give it a slowish build over the Spring while styling on my Hampsten on the odd sunny days and commuting through this crap weather on the incoming disc'er.

I'm stuck with a conundrum on it though. Do I go retro-mod and silvery? Retro silvery? Mix? Or straight modern?

Here's how I see the different builds shaping up -

(1) Retro-mod: Athena/Centaur/Potenza 11 silver stuff with the Grand Cru brakes, Steelman stem, Nitto bars and post, CK silver headset, and silver H+ wheels from Binxywarrsoul if someone else doesn't get em first.

(2) Retro: Some mix of silver Chorus 10 with an IRD Defiant crank, or a Racing Triple setup, or maybe even some DA7700 with DT shifters, and all the rest the same as the retro-mod.

(3) Mix: '14 Chorus 11 group, the Grand Cru brakes, the silver finishing kit same as (1) and (2), and some black hub/rim silver spoke combo wheels to tie things together - probably the Record/TB-14 wheels MuffinMan has.

(4) Modern: '14 Chorus 11, black TRP brakes, Superleggera stem, carbon bars, carbon post, and some all black wheels - something on the lighter side. Keep the silver HS, seatpost clamp, and put some Nitto R cages on there.

Part of me wants to test out this frameset as apples-to-apples with my other modern bikes as possible to see whether it can hang per the ad copy. And part of me wants to build it more as a cruiser/casual bike that's polished and pretty.

Thoughts?

Oh, and for now I’ve got it safely outta-sight...important since another one is coming in this weekend.

What frame? Nothing to see here...move along.

It’s harder to nail down the “N” if you keep some in boxes and spread the others throughout the house..

Keep the Hampsten modern and build this up classy, silver, and old school!

Hampsten is definitely staying as-is.. The '14 Chorus 11 group is an extra, not a cannibalization from the Hampsten.

But i think your frame would look best with the steelman stem and silver campy bits so voted for retro-mod. Tho no deep wheels pls .)

The wonderful thing about a steel frame is that it looks good no matter how you dress it up, or down.

On a steel frame:
I would call 9 speed blocks or less a retro build; 10 speeds off the down tube would be crypto-neo-retro; while 10 on the down tube could be retro or neo-retro, depending on the brakes; and 11 speeds would be modern.

I can barely make sense of what I'm saying, however...

I just love steel frames!

I voted modern.

Anything silvery and cranks that aren't the most recent four-arm pieces (shudder).

I would build it with Dura-Ace 7700, TB-14's, etc. But it's your bike and those usually turn out great, so go for it.

Went ahead and bought some more stuff for it, so here's what's locked in:

HS - CK Silver
Stem - Steelman
Bars - Nitto B105 42cm
Plugs - Nitto silver
Post - Nitto S-83
Wheels - Centaur silver to H+ Arch silver polished
Tires - Jack Brown 33.33 blackwall
Tubes - Latex
Brakes - VO Grand Cru
Cages - Nitto R
Shifter Stops - Record alloy
Tape - Fizik Soft Touch black

Saddle - either Rolls with gold rails, or SMP Forma

And now I need to make a call on the drivetrain components...but am leaning heavily to some form of silver Campy goodness.

Nice setups. My suggestion is only for the wheels. Skinny tubed/retro bikes should have (really) low profile wheels. don't let the wheels take away anything from the frameset. A good box section build with 28+ spokes would be ideal.

And about the boxes; I have learned that the garage is a safe place to keep N count as the Mrs rarely goes in there. Around the house, she's sure to spot and tally them up. :)

My Colnago with steel fork, Campy Record 10 speed, aluminum bits everywhere, Nucleon wheels. Oh, even (shudder) delta brakes.

See, that's my problem. My bikes in the garage are directly in front of where my wife parks the car... I'm doomed! lolz

I think the Archetypes are a good compromise for this one. I get the advantage of wider rims that'll play nicer with the 33c tires, but still have a nice polished look and normal spoke-count. And they aren't as tall as Aeroheads or other alloy aero rims.

We'll see how I like it. I already have the "modern" components, so if I don't like the way the silver stuff rides, it'll just get resold and the carbon bits will go on.

Silver....always silver. In my world it's the only acceptable color for bike components, though I might make an exception for a complete Campy Century group. If it was mine your Option 2 would be my first choice...Campy 10 with DT shifters.

Silver also makes a black frame stand out whereas black components blend in with the frame...

It did! BikeFlights was great. Seller packed the frame with pipe insulation wrap/styrofoam. Hope to have it built up soon.
Thanks Clean39T!
