I was wondering if anyone with an older CSI that has the cable guides built into the bottom bracket has had any problems with the cables cutting into the bottom bracket? Also does anyone know if the serial number CS 56L 086 means a 1986 56cm CSI?

Thanks

I think the CSi started around the mid 90's, maybe 95 or so.....
The 56L is 56 long. It should be 56x56 and no the cables haven't cut into the BB of my 92 Colorado...
Enjoy the ride.... :D

From the 95 catalog...

56L 56/56, 73.5/73, 41.5/98.8 wheelbase.

cable routing and brazed on guides. i doubt that it hurts anything, but I always use a section of cable liner (the plastic liner inside brake cables) to run the cables through - it cuts down on friction as well.

Dan- is there any place on the web where one can find these old catalogs? A quick look at the Serotta website didn't turn any up.

I think the number after the size refers to the number of that bike in the series so this would be the 86th 56L CSI built.

I have a '96 model with no problems with the bottom bracket.

Serotta can confirm the meaning of the serial number (and the history of the CSi model, but I don't think they were building them before '95 of so).

Thanks for all the information. I really like the looks of the CSI frame I just wish Serotta still made a steel frame with lugs but I guess they couldn't sell enough of them to justify the cost.

I have several bikes (Rivendells) with these guides and they are no problem. My first was built with some cable liner between the cable and guide but it eventually collected gunk and the cable was then moving the liner across the guide instead of the cable moving inside the liner so I cut it off and it works fine just as Rivendell said it would in the first place.

I had a 1998 CSI with the cable guides built into the bottom bracket. I bought it used and the cables were rusted and had cut into the bottom bracket, and also rubbed the frame where the cable came up between the chainstays. I replaced the cable guides with another one and used cable housing to prevent it cutting into the frame.
